Gentrification is defined as the process of renovating and improving a deteriorated urban district, in favor of affluent residents. In order for gentrification to take shape, the current community must be driven out through increased rent on their properties. Although alternatives might be offered to the current tenants and business owners, where will they go? Are they really expecting the elderly to start all over? Everyone that they’ve come to know is right here in Chinatown. What the upper class fails to acknowledge, is that many of the older Chinese generations are not well-educated and the businesses that they have are the only things that they are proficient at. The people of my generation and so forth are most likely not going to follow in their footsteps because of all the different opportunities out there. We were raised completely different from the way that they were raised and their goal is to ensure that our future would be better than theirs. They wouldn’t want us to go through the same experience in order to be successful. This is all that they have and it makes them happy. Nothing is going to last forever, so why not just let them enjoy the rest of what they have and leave the rest up to the next generation? Meaning, if they want to sell the property in the future, that is entirely up to them. There should not be an outside source intruding on something that they have never been part of. That is why I highly respect the elderly. Even though, sometimes, they would say the dumbest or the most hateful things, I know that it’s for our own good and is not their true intentions. It is a shame to see the most valuable thing in the community being shattered through power and greed. Gentrification has been happening for quite a while now, not just in Chinatown. My generation just chooses not to acknowledge it because it does not affect them directly. I’m not saying that you need to care because I’m telling you to. What I’m saying is that, you should know what is happening in a community and it is up to you to decide whether you want to contribute to its wellbeing. Never do anything that you don't want to.
I thought I would post my first frame of my first roll. I love this particular photo because it taught me to always get the names of my subject. At the time I took this photo I was absolutely terrified that I was going to fail shooting film so I was drinking up some liquid courage at the bar when I saw her I asked if I could take her portrait. She said " why in the world would you want to take my photo? " I said drunkenly I am sure " because you are beautiful" she gave me this look and its something I will never forget no matter how many rolls I go through.
I will always regret not getting her information because I would love nothing more than to deliver her a print.
If anyone here knows who she is or has seen her around Penn Station please reach out. #capturededication
