After more than a week into the ash eruptions of Halema'uma'u Crater, we're grateful for only light layers of rock particles on the farm. So far, we have not seen the worst: According to @USGS, the last time this crater spit ash in 1924, it caused the sky to turn from day to night several times in our little town of Pahala. .
Yesterday, low-lying ash clouds drifted our way and forced us to stay inside. Blue skies this morning allowed us to return to the farm. The trees seem to be holding up well -- better than us humans, actually.
From the photos, it kind of looks like the time we sprayed kaolin clay on the trees to help fight coffee berry borer. Now, we're studying whether the ash will have any effect on our coffee flowers. They look OK so far, as you can see here. Same goes for the coffee cherries. #fingerscrossed#waitandsee

Some of our favorite happy farmers over at @red_gate_ranch 🤗
Beyond pasture raised meats, Red Gate Ranch also has a bountiful garden of veggies and herbs. They have recently started a CSA (community supported agriculture) program where community members can subscribe to 1 box of produce each week and receive discounts on meat.
We will be munching on their greens at our June 3rd dinner!
Meet them and stock up on ingredients at the Saturday Farmers Market in Red Bluff, @gatherredding, or at their farm stand on Wednesdays at the Red Gate barn off Hwy 36 East.
We took a trip down Route 1 to visit @swantonberryfarm — We learned about what it takes to grow organic berries AND have a socially-just farm. Thank you Bear and Michelle for hosting us! (if you haven’t visited, take a drive down the coast and pick yourself some berries!) #nopa#nopasf#swantonberryfarm#knowyourfarmer#organic#fooooood

P.S. Those jars? 👆🏻 Those are called McDonald jars & we use them for incubation. Exactly 1 week ago today, they had just been filled with newly-fertilized eggs. Hatching started yesterday.
It will be another 7-10 years before the little ladies are ready to treat us to caviar.

I finally captured these natural grey yarns highlighting the subtle differences in colors. I peer into this basket and imagine so many projects to start. Do you get spacey when too many ideas spark ⚡️ in your creative mind? Tell me, without 🤔 overthinking, which I tend to do, what’s the first finished product you see? #calledtobecreative#instaknit#yarnlove
We regularly advocate for the decreased consumption of animal products. That is because the industrial production of animals can have a major impact on the environment from water and air pollution to increased greenhouse gas emissions. With that said it is important to note that all meat is not created equal. -
But animals play a major role in the ecosystem and raising them responsibly can be a key part in creating a more regenerative agriculture system.
"Maybe it’s time we socialized ourselves and others to budget for environmental activism, and use that money to buy meat produced by the soil-building, grassland-loving graziers in our communities."

Genau hingeschaut! 🧐 Wer die frisch begattete Königin erkennt sieht sogar noch den Begattungsschlauch, der von ihrem Hochzeitsflug übrig geblieben ist... so ein Bienen Spanner. 🤣

Look very closely! 🧐 Spotting the recently mated queen? You can even see what is left of the last drone she met on her mating flight... I‘m such a bee voyeur. 🤣
I have been wanting to share these lamb meatballs with you every time we eat them, but, unsurprisingly, it is not easy to make a ball of charred meat look appetizing to those not about to devour it.
Spread over one of my lunch salads this week, I felt they finally looked as good as they taste. We eat these almost every other week, usually in a lettuce wrap or a wheat pita, with a quick pickled veg and lemony yogurt sauce (because it is just as good as tzatziki but no one has to grate and squeeze a cucumber) and they feed us for 2+ days. Oh, and I almost always need sweet potato wedges on my plate with them, but we can talk about those another time, k 🧐
Does it mildly traumatize you that I drew a lil lamb on the recipe? I hope not, because he is living his best life, just like the lambs that gave me these meatballs. I know, because I buy meat straight from farmers I talk to and trust and that is the only way I feel good about eating it. #knowyourfarmer (also, we love and respect our veg friends and promise to keep our posts balanced 👩🏼🌾)

Adirondack Blues, ready to be hilled. I used to hill by hand...and it sucked. Too many labor hours and sore backs. Luckily, I met a pretty awesome gentleman who lives down the road who's letting me borrow his hilling attachment next week. Pretty excited to be able to blow through these in just a few minutes!
