Last weekend I tried three motorcycles: BMW r nine t, Ducati Scrambler Classic and Husqvarna Silverpilen 701. Today I tried yet another one, the Kawasaki Z900RS! A great dealer and great weather probably contributed to a great afternoon.
Being a kid of the 70s and 80s, I immediately recognize the DNA from its ancestor, Kawasaki Z1. Luckily enough the good looks are matched by good performance.
Once on the road, you quickly notice how well the engine, chassis and gearbox work together. Well balanced. That goes for the handling as well. It feels bigger than it is, probably because of the comfortable seating position and calm compartment.
It feels lightyears ahead of Kawasaki's earlier retro offerings, W650 and W800, and it can clearly hold its own against the competition, retro inspired or not. Aren't there any downsides to this bike? Well, I'd really like the extra torque that I got in the BMW R nine T, and I wouldn't mind if Kawasaki went even more retro and offered spoke wheels. Also, I noticed an ever so slight buzz in the handlebars from vibrations. Those are minor issues though. In fact this could very well be my next bike, thanks to its no-nonsense rideability and nice looks combined with all the performance I need.
