When should I place mobility into my routine? 🤔If you don’t know by now, regular mobility should be programmed to maintain and increase active ROM, “priming” muscles and movements prior to exercise, decreasing soreness/risk of injury and overall joint health. If you’re constantly having nagging injuries or aren’t increasing in strength, look to your mobility routine that will provide proper recovery and increase tissue health.

If you can’t get into a desired movement, it is either a motor control or a mobility/tissue extensibility problem. Either are a HUGE issue...you shouldn’t be forcing a movement that your body can’t handle. A motor control problem most likely will need a coach or clinician working with you for proper cueing, etc., but mobility anyone can and should do.

To get back to our main question, mobility work is probably best suited prior to exercise day with applicable movements that translate to your routine that day. You can also use this as your warm-up or included in your warm-up. We are coming upon the changing of the seasons here in the Pacific Northwest. This powerful shift, or rtusandhis in Sanskrit, mark the weeks around the solstices and equinoxes where the honoring of seasonal transition is important for good health and harmony. Consider the root words: Rtu or season and sandhis or joint (one meaning amongst others!). Our joints are important juncture points or transitions. They can be areas where stagnation or weakness can be found or show up. They are valuable "gates" of our body wisdom. Taking care to honor our joints with healthy support and care is essential for overall health and wellness, especially as we age.  As such, honoring the shift from the calls of nature is a connected way to continue the dance both internally and externally. The microcosm is the macrocosm both within and without. I’ve personally dealt with lower back issues (L4/L5 and L5/S1 herniations) over the last 10+ years and a large part of pain of my pain management was soft tissue work in the lower limb. To be specific, the medial arch, peroneals and lateral gastroc.  The nerves that originate at the lumbar spine innervate the lower limbs. If you have had low back in the past, addressing the soft tissue in these areas could potentially decrease pain and improve function. I’ve personally dealt with lower back issues (L4/L5 and L5/S1 herniations) over the last 10+ years and a large part of pain of my pain management was soft tissue work in the lower limb. To be specific, the medial arch, peroneals and lateral gastroc.  The nerves that originate at the lumbar spine innervate the lower limbs. If you have had low back in the past, addressing the soft tissue in these areas could potentially decrease pain and improve function.
