As I travel across the world and experience cultures and communities, there are some where I full-heartedly support and feel that what they are doing makes a true, deep impact. There are many arts organziations that provide this and @thedanceconservatoryny is one of these places!
Located in Cortlandt Manor, New York, The Dance Conservatory is a newly established studio (as of January) and is offering amazing opportunities towards their dancers. Check them out!
I had an amazing time teaching their today and supporting this organization!
Come on who doesn't love playing around in old pointeshoes? It's even better if you're wearing a tutu 😄
I'm so excited for tomorrow! I'm going to learn the gypsy dance from Don Quioxte at Tanz Tanz workshop at Staatsballett Berlin and in the evening I'm going to see the Gala of the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin together with some friends 😊
@theconceptartists are bringing back one of Boston’s best summer traditions. 6/30 - CONcentrate on the ARTistry returns to Arts at the Armory to showcase some of Boston’s most talented urban artists 💃🏻🕺🔥
A little background on why this show exists. My dance company, CONart, used to be a competition team. We worked hard. We won some events. We established (and have maintained) a sterling reputation as one of Boston’s most consistent and well-organized dance organizations. But when we competed, we focused on external validation. We had artistic freedom to create as we pleased, but tailored what we did to fit a certain template. Sound familiar to you? 🤔
At one Spring 2014 event, a judge told us “you shouldn’t do a (locking) wrist-roll in this section of your routine. It doesn’t make sense.” 🤔🤔🤔 The judge wasn’t speaking on the execution of the move. Based on her dance experience, she likely thought locking vocabulary should only be done in a locking setting or done to funk music. This was when @tarikhcampbell and I realized these were the people we focused on validating the hours and effort we put into preparation - People who danced in a box, or were used to doing and seeing dance through a specific lense. So from that day forward, we decided to perform for ourselves. This comment was one of my main catalysts for moving away from competitions, so I THANK the judge for their misplaced artistic feedback 🙏
Over the past 4 years, CONart has performed more but we haven’t competed. People ask “hey you guys are really good, why don’t you compete?” Competing doesn’t translate to BEING good. It can inspire you to work harder or tap into your creativity but true pursuit of excellence comes from within. Rather than spend our time thinking how to impress 3-5 judges at every show, we learned more about dance, and ourselves. We remain as hard working as in 2011, but we’ve freed ourselves from needing external validation. We work hard because we choose to. We created this showcase as an opportunity for performers who excel because they love what they do 🙌
June 30 you’ll see some amazing artists. See you then! #COTA2018
