“I feel like I've been in a coma for the past twenty years and I'm just now waking up,” Kevin Spacey says in one of my favorite American Beauty scenes.
You spend most of your youth pining for adulthood and much of your adulthood trying to regain youthful curiosity and joy. This is how the mid-life crisis builds. I have a friend who had a mid-life crisis in his early thirties. He was sitting there in his office and it slapped him across the face. He rage-quit, left the coast for the inland ranges and traveled for a few months to find perspective on it all. After a year, he returned to the same gig, followed by humbled apologies, and fueled by a new set of goals. He knew he eventually would quit that job for good, but for now it offered an opportunity to release, as he put it, “the binds of the rat race.” You get these moments where you’ll be sitting there and out of the blue you see yourself for who you really are. You see yourself and it’s not how you imagined. And all you know is that you need to feel inspired. So you go. It doesn’t matter where. You just go. Because you know that finding yourself requires lost part.
Here's to being lost and the bounty in the find.
