Whilst travelling around Snæfellsnes peninsula on my recent trip to Iceland I almost accidentally came across this statue of Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir, or Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir in Icelandic, one of the most famous women in the country’s history. An intrepid traveller, she is known for her many voyages and for been the first woman to give birth to a European in North America.
She was born in Laugarbrekka in the late 10th century, and around the year 1000 travelled with her parents to Greenland. There she married Thorstein Eiriksson, the son of Eirik the Red, who was the first Icelander to settle in Greenland.
After her marriage Gudrid and her husband attempted to sail to Vinland (the area of North America explored by the Vikings), however the voyage was unsuccessful and Thorstein died during the journey. After his death Gudrid moved to back to Greenland to Brattahlid to stay with her brother-in-law, Leif Erikson, who had discovered the New World.
Here she married the merchant Thorfinn Karlsefni, who was apparently keen to travel to the New World, and was encouraged by Gudrid to do. After the marriage the couple completed a successful journey to North America, where Gudrid gave birth to a son, Snorri Thorfinnsson. However, after a conflict with the country’s indigenous population, Gudrid and Thorfinn returned to Europe, travelling back to Greenland, and then onto Iceland via Norway. .
After Thorfinn’s death Gudrid continued her travels, embarking on a pilgrimage to Rome during a time when Iceland was converting to Christianity. On her return she entered a nunnery. It is believed that nearly all Icelanders can trace their heritage back to her.

#girlpower#icelandicwomen#empowerment#dontstopfighting#igualdaddegenero#iceland#reykjavikloves#noticiasitinerante FOTO: @mundo_itinerante
FLASHBACK FRIDAY PT.1: My trip to ICELAND back in April. As glorious and wonderful of an experience one could ever possibly imagine. I never knew such wonders existed. This country's beauty is something to behold. The landscape, mother nature, people, & natural wonders have forever left a glorious impression on me... I walked on a giant glacier, explored cyrstal blue ice caves, road Icelandic Viking horses, relaxed in a giant geothermal spa located in the middle of a Lava Field, and saw nealry a dozen captivating waterfalls; I also walked on the black sand beaches (one with blue diamond looking pieces of glacier), toured many of the shooting locations for "Game of Thrones", met the most amazing Icelandic people (inlcuding the gorgeous Icelandic women 😉) while touring and staying in the capital city, Reykjavik. Just needed to reminisce about this trip. Life can be difficult and you have to experience the beauty of traveling, seeing the world, meeting new people, and observing mother nature's most cherished beauty. In other words, GET OUTSIDE YOUR BOX!! ❤🌍🛳🛫 #traveling#iceland#bluelagoon#reykjavik#waterfalls#icelandichorses#icelandicpeople#icelandicwomen#volcanoes#glaciers#freespirit#actor#acting#actorslife#torturedartist#gameofthrones#aesthetic#aestheticlifestyle#flashbackfriday
