Sorry for being totally MIA. I really needed to go back and think. The problems in my pack didn’t get any better. After talking with a dog spesialist it was made clear that Mira wanted to get rid of Alta. This means she would most likely never accept Alta into the pack. Akila is only following what Mira does. When she is alone with Alta she does nothing. One of them couldn’t be in the pack. Alta has everything I want in a working dog. But Mira is my rock! After thinking to my head hurt. I figured out rehoming Mira was unacceptable. I can’t live without Mira. Then it was Alta who needed a new home. I took it on me to find it. I contacted Alta’s previous owner and got the names of the people who was interested in Alta at the same time as me. I met with one of them yesterday. They liked Alta and brought her home. I have a good feeling about this. They live in Ålesund and have a husky/kelpie mix boy. It was so hard seeing her go. Thinking about it gives me tears but it is so good thinking I made the right choice for her❤️ She didn't have it good in my pack. I have decided that I will wait with a third pack member. I will wait to Akila has turned three years old. Then Mira will also be older and hopefully a better packleader🤞🏻
If you want to follow Alta you can see her on @leonard.the.huskelpie 🐾
Got to borrow a kicksled yesterday☀️ I have never used a kicksled before. I didn't feel comfortable on it. It’s so light so I feel I don’t have control. I fell three times😂 Hehe. It was good for Alta and Akila working together. They did so well and were so patient with me😊 Swipe to see them in action👉🏻
Took some days to regroup before giving a new update on the girls. Still some tension in the pack but all and all doing good. Still giving Alta alone time with only one of the girls at a time. Yesterday I went on a walk with only Alta and Mira. Mira was off leash wearing her dog training collar and Alta walked with a long leash. This gives them the freedom to decide themselves if they want to greet. The dog training collar was only with incase something would happen. Which it did not👍🏻
At the moment I am focusing mostly on Mira and Alta’s relationship. Akila does not care😋 New rules for Mira are that she is not allowed on the couch and to jump on me. Letting her be on the couch, even though the other dogs dont want to, gives her a higher status. It is really disrespectful when Mira jumps on me, so she is not allowed to do that anymore. I need to be the one in charge, the alpha. This to ensure a stable pack.
I see now that the problem Mira has with Alta is that I have been giving her more attention. This I have done to make Alta more comfortable with me since he is a nervous dog. Now that our relationship has grown Alta is no longer sleeping in the bedroom, but in the living room in her dog bed. Akila and Mira are in the hallway. Also giving Mira the attention she is used to get. This showing Mira that Alta is no threat to her place in the pack. My hope is that this will make Mira stop dominating Alta the way she has lately.
Yesterday was a hard day. While I was taking the girls inside (like I've done many times) Mira attacked Alta. Akila joined in (following her leader). I worked hard getting them off her. It was hard when we where outside and I was alone. I finally got Alta inside and away from Mira and Akila. In the process I got bit a lot on my arms and hands. Alta got some wounds on her back legs and neck. But she is in no pain. I needed to go to the emergency room to get my wounds cleaned and antibiotics.
Why Mira decided to attack Alta I am unsure on. Alta did not provoke Mira. I think it’s a mix of a new female in the pack and me giving Alta so much attention. My main focus now will be continuing my work with Alta and starting on Mira’s aggression towards Alta. Akila is only following Mira so if I get Mira in line she will follow.
Alta is still in good spirits considering. Her wounds look good and she is doing fine ❤️
On saturday I had the hardest day in a long time! Alta and many of the other dogs had been off leash around the cabin since thursday with no problem. All of a sudden Alta was no where to be seen. After not seeing her for about half an hour I started getting really stressed. After talking with the other people around the area we found out she had went up to the mountains. Alta is very nervous to unknown people and loud noises This made me even more scared that she could get lost. We contacted the police and many Facebook help sites. This to ask for help and spreading the word. We got ready to head up the mountain to look for Alta. Then all of a sudden she passed by the cabin. We jumped on our skiis and followed her. The other people kept their distance when I got close to her. She was very scared. I had with me dog food and got Vodka to help me show Alta I didn't want to do her any harm. Help from another dog can make a big difference. She came to me and I couldn't be happier! In total she was lost for eight hours. I was a total wreck!
I know there was many snowmobiles out that day. There is a trail not so far from the cabin. One probably passed by and spooked her. She will not be let off leash again before I have worked with her fears. I know very little about working with fearful dogs. If anyone have any tips I will gladly appreciate it❤️
