Day 139: Rarely do I encounter another person walking on the shoulder. Today I did. A man, maybe in his 60s, in clothing better suited for fall than today’s steamy pre-summer. He didn’t look at me or respond to my “good morning” until after he’d passed me. “You doin’ the walk across, huh?” he asked. I said that’s the plan. You know,” he said, “when you think of it as something bigger than a walk, it’s a pretty good model for life.”
Another man approached me while I was taking a break at a gas station. “Where you coming from?” he asked. “Los Angeles,” I said. Then more questions - the usual sorts plus, do I have a job, a home, a life besides this. “Man, you really can’t judge a book by its cover,” he said. “I figured you were some kind of destitute. Recognizing humanity is humbling as hell.” Then later, I started bonking 5-miles before my scheduled destination (an RV park). So I found a Super 8 for $40 a night. There I met Jennifer, the hotel clerk. I told her about my walk. The hot fire in my belly. I asked what her ‘thing’ was. “Well, I work a lot,” she said. “Here and the Waffle House.” She gave me my key and I gave her my card. I was stoked LB fit through the room’s door. Minutes later, a knock. It was Jennifer. “Can I get a photo,” she said. “I want my friends to follow you too!” Before long I was showered up and heading to grab a bite. But first I stopped at the front desk. “Hey Jennifer, when I asked you your ‘thing’, you said it was your jobs,” I said. “Is that all it is?” She thought a bit. “No,” she said, “my 3 kids are my world.” She told me all about them. The oldest who looks just like her, the middle about to turn 10, how she coddles the youngest. “But it’s also photography. I am very creative. My dream is to one day be a professional photographer!” #tomswalkacrossamerica#mywalkinglife#caddovalley#photography#photographer#artist#filmcamera#super8#wafflehouse#bonk#hotandhumid#arkansasheat#gowarriors
Today’s Pups-N-Pints 5k was tough. It was ~73, humid, and sunny. My goal was to maintain a strong effort despite the heat. 21:00 was good for 3rd overall male. The best part was the @dogfishhead post race with @elizabethclor, @hannahandchewie, and @littlewellner.
it turns out I am faster without the running stroller 😂 11 miles along the river today! I picked Conor’s naptime to do my long run so I would feel less #momguilt 💗legs were tired from yesterday’s tough brick workout, but I’m adapting and getting back in the game! #ironmom#crushedit#hotandhumid#runlove#momlife
