Much of Gabe Gonzalez’s day at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital Polytrauma Clinic is spent working with therapists helping him regain some of the skills and abilities he lost after suffering a major traumatic brain injury in Iraq. But there’s one therapist in particular that puts a smile on his face every time he visits. It just so happens that this therapist is a four-legged one.

Hercules, a 19-month old black Labrador retriever, is the facility’s new therapy dog. He and his handler have been visiting patients in both the outpatient and inpatient clinics for nearly a month now, but Gonzalez’s room has become a daily stop on their rounds of the hospital. “Right off the bat when we came into the room, I saw Gabe’s expression on his face and he just started smiling and he was giggling a little bit. I could see his eyes light up and his mom’s eyes light up as well.” Read more about Hercules and Gonzalez at blogs.va.gov #HonoringVets #TherapyDog

For years Navy Corpsman Malik Jones played pool every weekend with his friends. That all changed when he suffered a gunshot to the back of his head in 2017. Malik suffered a traumatic brain injury and was left paralyzed on the left side of his body as a result of this injury. While Jones is still on active duty in the Navy, his treatment and rehabilitation is taking place in partnership with McGuire VA Medical Center’s Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. When Jones arrived there, his therapeutic recreation specialist immediately started working to get him back into activities he enjoyed. He wanted to play pool, but trying to manage a traditional pool bridge and the pool stick was next to impossible. With some help from his therapist and a 3D printer, a VA assistive technology team created a rolling pool bridge to help guide the stick. Jones picked up on it quickly and immediately found a strategy on how to use it. Motivated to move forward with his life, Jones is doing more than playing pool, working hard with staff of the Polytrauma Transitional Rehabilitation Program to regain his lost strength and skills. Read more of his story at blogs.va.gov #HonoringVets

Let the games begin. The really big games. Thanks to one volunteer, Veterans at the @milwaukeeva have oversized versions of Jenga and Yahtzee to play, as the result of his Eagle Scout project. “I just wanted to do something for people who deserve it, the Veterans,” said Alex Jacobs, a member of Troop 90 in North Lake. “I think they deserve the help more than anyone, people that protected our country.” #HonoringVets

Dr. Kenneth Heilman, formerly chief of neurology at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida, is now with the Geriatric, Research, Education and Clinical Center at the site. He's also a distinguished professor emeritus of neurology at the University of Florida. He's also a @usairforce Veteran. "My grandmother lived in Belorussia - present-day Belarus and Poland - when she was pregnant with my mother. But she wanted to raise her children in a country where they could be free and not harassed. Therefore, she immigrated to the United States," Heilman shares. "She loved America and wanted her grandsons to serve this country. Although I had several years of deferment, I could not decide if I should go into neurology or stay in internal medicine. In addition, the war in Vietnam was growing, and the military did not have enough doctors. After doing two years of medical training at Cornell University-Bellevue Hospital, I volunteered for active duty and entered the Air Force in 1965." Thank you for your service in Vietnam and for continuing to serve Veterans today. Read more about Kenneth Heilman researchers who served at www.research.va.gov. @varesearch #HonoringVets

Today I received this beautiful gift from a good friend, an Army sergeant major that I went to high school with.
This is a replacement for my dad‘s beret that I lost in the California wildfire.
My heart was so broken that I lost something so valuable, something that survived through the Vietnam war and traveled the world with my dad.
It’s not an exact duplicate but the heart of the men that replaced this for me, adds to making this beret so special.

Veteran Kathy Rehm has served her country, took a cruise ship around the world and even camped on the Gobi desert just a few years ago! Her only regret was not finishing college. So she went back to school, inspiring many in the Veterans Resource Opportunity Center (VROC) at the College of San Mateo, but her health stopped her just short of her Associates Degree. With the help of her friends, our staff, the college and the VROC, she was presented with an honorary degree. Congratulations Kathy! #HonoringVets

[Scroll for more pics] It was a special celebration this past weekend for an Arkansas Veteran and his family. Not only did #WWII Army Veteran Leroy Evatt celebrate his 100th birthday (which is today), but his wife Uvie turned 98 on Sunday.... AND the couple will celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary a few weeks early. “This is a special occasion for many reasons,” said Dr. Margie Scott, Medical Center Director for the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, who presented the couple with a commemorative coin.

Happy anniversary and happy birthdays to you both! #HonoringVets

Member of the @UNMLoboWSoccer team spent time this week volunteering to motivate Veterans to get active. On Wednesday, student athletes visited the the Raymond G. Murphy VA Mecial Center in Albuquerque to encourage local Veterans to sign up for the @sports4vets National Veterans Golden Age Games.

The games will take place in early August in Albuquerque. The event is the premier senior adaptive rehabilitation program in the United States, and the only national multi-event sports and recreational seniors’ competition program designed to improve the quality of life for all older Veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.

Today the staff from the ICU at Maine Medical Center contacted the Portland Fire Department and asked if our members could assist them with giving a deserving send off for a USMC Veteran who had served two tours of duty in Iraq. This was a request that firefighters from our Bramhall Fire Station were honored to assist with.

This Marines body was covered with the American flag as he was escorted down a hallway that was lined with Portland Firefighters & Police Officers, Military Veterans, Doctors and hospital staff, all standing at attention. His final destination was the operating room where his organs would be used to give others the gift of life.

🐾Today I got to go to a chimney inspection & meet one of my Hooman’s clients new Neighbors. She needed to be comforted by a dog & I did my best because she just lost hers 3 days ago. She holds & waves the American Flag 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸on busy roads in Annapolis because she wants to honor the Americans who have fought & died for our country. She still has a dream despite living with MS for the past 28 years. She wants to be a symbol for the next generation to respect our great country, constitution, flag, anthem , military, police & veterans. Pete Zimmer is legally blind and has never been on the slopes, but this week, the 92-year-old WWII Veteran skied for the first time at the @sports4vets @davhq National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. And while he found the ride in the monoski “a little hairy,” he took it in stride. “Don’t let age define what you can or can’t do,” Zimmer said. “Go out and try it. Have no expectations. Do what you can do, and if you can’t, find something else to do.” Read more about Pete and the Winter Sports Clinic at blogs.va.gov

Sailors from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard fold the American flag during the full honors funeral of U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas J. Hudner in Section 54 of Arlington National Cemetery. Hudner was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 4.

From the @usnavy: Accepted into the Naval Academy in 1943, Hudner was commissioned as an officer in 1946 and became an aviation officer in 1949. On Dec. 4, 1950, Hudner and his squadron were providing air support to American troops during the battle of the Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War when one of Hudner’s squadron mates, Ensign Jesse L. Brown, the first African-American to be trained as a naval aviator, was shot down by enemy anti-aircraft fire.

Seeing that Brown was still alive in the wreckage, Hudner decided to crash-land his own aircraft in an effort to render aid to his fellow aviator. Unfortunately, when Hudner made his way to Brown, he realized that Brown’s right leg was crushed under the damaged instrument panel of his aircraft. Hudner stayed with Brown, continuing to attempt to free him, until a U.S. helicopter arrived to help. Together for almost 45 minutes, Hudner and the helicopter pilot used an ax to hack away at the damaged plane but they could not free Brown. Even an attempt to amputate his leg was not successful.

As nightfall approached with the corresponding drop in temperature, Hudner and the helicopter pilot reached a grim decision to leave Brown behind since the pilot would be unable to fly in the dark. Brown was already near death and died shortly afterwards.

Hudner’s attempt to save Brown came only two years after the U.S. Navy had made the decision to desegregate. For the rest of his life, Hudner said that the reason he landed to save Brown was because Brown, like all service members, would have done the same for him.

On April 13, 1951, Hudner received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Chosin Reservoir. He served 27 years in the U.S. Navy. He passed away Nov. 13, 2017. He was 93 years old. #HonoringVets 📷: U.S. Army photo by Elizabeth Fraser / @arlingtonnatl

Thanks to donations to the Central Texas VA Health Care System music therapy program Veterans are getting a chance to become musicians. Music therapy has many documented benefits. It promotes relaxation, decreases restlessness and agitation; helps to develop new relationships and encourages family connections; helps with pain management and reduction of pain; promotes reminiscence and cognition; and helps Veterans maintain a high quality of life. Check with your local VA to see if they offer music therapy in your area. #HonoringVets
