Last weekend we had a few bottles of @bellwoodsbeer Farmagedon and poured the last inch of each one into a small starter. I stepped it up this week and presto! A great looking healthy yeast/brett culture. That is going into a Saison brewed two days ago as a secondary yeast source to funk it up a bit.
@bdzyngel took me to a great spot to grab some fresh spruce tips for this beer. Tree to brew in about 5hrs.

Little yeasty beasties doing their thing on a standard lager. W34/70 to be precise. This one will sit throughout winter and clear itself up in bottles and keg for an easy summer drinker. Nothing complex, just a well rounded crowd pleaser. #homebrew#beer#craftbrewing#craftbeer#realbeer
I don't want to jinx it, but I believe I just made considerable headway in getting to the bottom of an issue with my cannabis-infused beer. I've got some math & science to figure out. 🤓 #homebrew#cannabis#denver#colorado
So, tonight I get to post Stus Brews on Stus Brews... nope, not my own, rather one of my workmates who is also a Stu, and who brews (far more seriously than any efforts I’ve made!) Introducing Weka Island!
This is a crack at an XPA, using Moutere and Motueka hops. 5% ABV.
Colour and clarity are good. A lovely golden hue which is only slightly clouded by some suspended solids, probably as much to do with my poor pour into the jug as anything!... I don’t often check as closely as I have here, but Stu has asked me to be cruel!
The aroma was spot on when i poured it... a beer often lives or dies at this moment; this easily gets a pass with the expected fruit aromas, Citrus stands out, with a hint of something more tropical.
Taste test; first hit is smooth and palatable followed by a slightly astringent note which I didn’t expect, almost an aniseed flavour came through, although this faded quickly and ceased to be noticeable after a few mouthfuls. After a palate cleanse and re-hit, I didn’t get it at all. The bitter comes through well to balance the experience, becoming an afterglow which leaves you wanting some more.. and the cycle begins again! Overall, a pleasant flavoured, easy drinking ale. Definitely one I could drink a couple of easily.
It’s homebrew beer, but it’s likely most punters wouldn’t know, I damn sure wouldn’t if I hadn’t!
I give this a solid 8/10, I think Stu will revisit this and refine it somewhat... small tweaks is all it would ever need.
As the label states, Stus 7th brew, so to punch out something this good so early on speaks volumes about both the information out there and Stus ability to use that information.
Leaves me looking forward to the bottle of licorice Stout he donated to the cause as well... 🍻😄 To explain the name; Moutere means island, Motueka means island of wekas (a flightless bird native to NZ.. yes another one, no not a kiwi) 🐥🏝 #beer#beersies#instabeer#brew#craftbeer#beerporn#brewski#beerme#beeroclock#cerveza#beersofinstagram#kiwi#summer#weekend#party#beerstagram#beersnob#craftbeerlife#craftbeernotcrapbeer#bier#newzealand#drinkup#drinking#goodtimes#cheers#homebrew#review#waxlyrical
