The Roman Amphitheater at Bosra in Syria. (2nd century AD).
The core of the Roman theatre, just as in Greek versions, is the ‘orchestra’, which was semicircular and called a ‘platea’. (The stalls of modern theatres), although in ancient times the ‘platea’ contained the choir rather than the audience. A wooden stage rose in front of this ‘platea’, and beyond it was a ‘frons scenae’; a painted backdrop that preceded the use of scenery. The ‘frons scenae’ hid the ‘post scaenium’; the wings used by the actors and stagehands and to store the props and masks used in the performances.
This Syrian theatre at Bosra is 102 metres across and has seating for about 15,000 people. During performances, a fine mist of scented water was sprayed over the audience to keep everyone comfortable in the desert heat. It’s among the largest built in the Ancient Roman civilisation and its state of preservation is close to miraculous. In fact, it’s the best preserved site both in Syria and across the Roman empire. It was substantially restored between 1947 and 1970, before which it contained large quantities of sand, which may have helped to protect the interior. It’s built from black basalt, which is an extremely hard stone.
