One of my most recent works (Cosmic Pulsation: Dwarf Star) and a couple drawings from 2016. These drawings really aren't that far apart in terms of when I made each one, but in terms of patience, technical ability, attention to detail, imaginative concepts, and overall skill and artistic flare, these drawings of mine are worlds apart, and it took a shit load of experimentation, trial and error, struggle, failure, and even disappointment to get to this level I'm at right now... and the journey is far from over. Up until November of 2016, I wanted to draw shojou and moé type characters, lolis, fanart, and even meme characters (thank god I never made it to that phase) pretty generic anime drawings, really. But the thing is, it took me time to realize that I'm not satisfied with that direction. All these years of practice and struggle, only to draw like every other anime artist just lost its appeal, especially since I have many idols outside of that art style (which is why I don't keep up with trending anime anymore, since it feels rather stagnant now 😉) So from that point on, I threw away everything I knew about drawing your usual anime characters and looked to real innovators and artists that have always caught my eye, such as Suehiro Maruo, Junji Ito, Alphonse Muncha, Yamamoto Takato, Terada Katsuya, Andi Soto, and many more. I also looked deeper into Japanese and European cultures, and how the two can mix, as I've always loved the whole Eurasian type aesthetic. But most of all, my father. Learning more about him both as an artist and a man has changed my worldview, as if he's my future self, and in order to be the man and artist he is, I have to keep learning, experimenting, and changing, never showing compromise for anything less than what I truly want out of life. Now, although I still have a long path to tread, I'm proud to say my work is an indirect, visual mirror of my own personal growth and development, and it pleases me to get to share such growth openly with you all. Stay ambitious, never settle for anything less than your standards, but also stay versatile, too ❤ 黒木
