Larke Pass the Himalayas, +5106 meter, on the roof of the world. ✅ After my first mental breakdown on day 2 I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it. What broke me was a detour 1000 meter up and then 1000 meter down again, all for nothing. That shit is just not ok. But slowly my self talk changed from ‘I’m not sure if I’ll make it’ to ‘wow, you are already doing this aren’t you, so yes you can. You already are.’ Once my talk changed I actually speeded up my pace and felt stronger and stronger. Amazing what the mind can do for the body. Being strong doesn’t just come from being physically fit, a healthy mind comes into play too. So by the time the day arrived on which we had to cross the highest part of the trek, I knew I could this. 3 am waking up from my tent looking at the brightest stars you’ll ever see, the sun slowly lightning the mountain tops. But when I made the pass and everyone I have been walking with was waiting for me, I just simply collapsed. I lost it. I cried all my tears, tears of utter happiness, tears for my amazing body that was so broken half a year ago that I couldn’t even walk, tears for feeling all these beautiful emotions and how good it feels to not be scared of that. And good it felt. And now there is this new force in me that is so strong, that I feel I can do anything by just simply being, not having to do anything for that. This has been the most transformative journey of my life so far 💕
What historical factors contributed to the development of the Indian-Trinidadian community as distinct and isolated from the larger Trinidadian population?
Historically a host of factors functioned to situate Indians as separate from the rest of African society.Soon after arrival in Trinidad, Indian indentured laborers were banished to the sugar estates concentrated in the flatland or rolling hills of the western side of the island, later known as the sugar belt, thereby subjecting them to spatial isolation. As indentured laborers they were legally differentiated from the rest of the population and were subject to a number of laws that restricted their mobility and hence their contact with the wider society.Occupationally too, they were confined to the cultivation and processing of cane. Thus the majority of Indians were confined to the rural agricultural sector.Religious and cultural differences coupled with their inability to speak English, underscored their alienation from the rest of the population.Symbolically too, Indians were represented as outsiders.Since the Indian presence was thought to be only temporary, very little effort was made by the colonial government to integrate Indians into the rest of society.Even education functioned to separate East Indians. The Canadian Presbyterian Missions catered exclusively to Indians and instruction was in Hindi
