Co-Owner, Erin Stack, is kicking off #testimonialtuesday “I don’t practice hot yoga because I hate my body. I practice hot yoga because I love my body.
I look forward to the time I get to spend on my mat. Where all the noise of the outside world is silenced long enough for me to turn my focus inward. For me, hot yoga fosters an awareness (and tremendous gratitude) of all the things my body CAN do. Because there was a time in my life that my body couldn’t do anything.
In May of 1990 I was stricken with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). GBS is a rapid onset of muscle paralysis that damages the peripheral nervous system.
I was 14 and I was completely paralyzed.
I spent most of that summer at Children’s Hospital. While GBS comes on quickly, it can take months (or years) to recover. But I was determined not to start high school in my wheelchair. Recovery for me required intensive rehabilitation with the help of a multidisciplinary team - physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists- all under the guide of a neurologist.
And parents that would not let me quit.
Daily physical therapy re-taught me proper posture and how to maintain alignment. Then I progressed to strength, endurance and gait training as I re-learned how to walk. I gradually increased in mobility as well as joint function. I walked into my first day of high school with only the assistance of a cane and
a new (hard-earned) appreciation for my body. And all the amazing things it CAN do.
I practice hot yoga out of gratitude for the mobility I have.
PS... the bad perm was not a result of GBS... I actually paid for that shit!”
You know how mummas sometimes tend to put their kids first and what they want/need for themselves tends to fall by the wayside? I've known this chick since I first looked after her 4 year old (who's now 21) and that's always been the case. But today, while child number 6 was at kindy, she took a big step and came to her first PT session. And you know who she did it for? Herself!! 😍
Congratulations on smashing it today, Andrea, and welcome to the MAD family! I know your kids will be as proud of you as you are of them. I'm looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together :). P.S. I'm currently offering a special for people who come to my place for training during school hours. We've got a good little gym and I'll even let you choose the Spotify play list. Message me if you want details!
As our beautiful & inspirational #girlboss @stephchapel goes on maternity leave, we have sensational @blabbey filling in, whilst Steph is away. Her classes are high energy and kickass, we know you’re going to love them as much as we do! ❤️
