Take me back to warmer days. Days full of monkey bars and way too much ice cream.
We tried to keep Zakariya away from processed sugar as much as we could, but his Daada (Urdu for grandfather) and Seedo (Palestinian Arabic dialect for grandfather) had always snuck him a bite of their dessert. One day I got home from work and found this guy with an entire Nestle drumstick in his hand, an ice cream goatee, and the biggest smile.
I'm grateful for the big family Zakariya has around him. I'm an immigrant. My parents moved across the world for a better life for us. I didn't have grandparents around me, no cousins, no extended family. It was just my parents and their 4 kids. It's been 20 years since we came to Canada, and my parents now have 8 grandkids and an entire community for support.
