I love reading about Eastern medicine as they look at the  whole body when treating an ailment rather than just the symptom.

Saturday Soup on the go

- 1 onion - vegetable stock
- 2 handfuls of red split lentils
- 2 leeks
- 2 stalks celery
- 4carrots
- garlic

1. Put all veg in pan
2. Cover with stock and simmer for 45 mins. 
3. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of curry powder. Simmer for 5-7mins. 
4. Add 2 massive handfuls of watercress or kale. Blend and serve 💛 .

Um artigo fresquinho de abril, avaliou a suplementação de magnésio em pacientes com alteração na pressão arterial e nos parâmetros hemodinâmico do coração (ou seja, saúde)❤
Os pesquisadores testaram em 48 indivíduos em uso de medicação hipertensiva crônica, 300mg de óxido de magnésio, durante 1 mês, com orientação de manter o mesmo plano alimentar.
Os achados foram sensacionais: diminuição sistêmica da pressão, melhora expressiva do funcionamento cardíaco na contratilidade e diminuição da resistência vascular periférica.
Mas você não tem  problemas no coração então nem preciso se preocupar??

Do you have 15 minutes to spare? If so, you can totally make this pickled red onions. And the best part is you can customize it to your liking. There are a million ways to do this and this is the basic recipe I use bc it’s fast and easy. 
Pickled red onions are an awesome  topping  for tacos, wraps, veggie burgers, salads, Buddha bowls or eat it by itself like I do at times 😄. This is one large red onion, about a cup of white vinegar, a tiny amount of pink salt, date sugar, some Aleppo peppers, fresh peppercorns, coriander seeds and a bay leaf. 
I’ll write the recipe on my blog but roughly: I combined all the ingredients in a pot (except the red onions) to a boil. I then added the sliced onions and stirred it until it’s just slightly softened and wilted. Transfer into a glass container and cool. Store in refrigerator for up to 3 weeks.

Can adding spices to your grilled meats do more than make it taste good?
➖When meats are smoked or grilled at high temperatures, compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) and heterocyclic amines (HA's) are formed. A lot of research on PAH's and HA's recently have shown that chronic, long-term exposure (even low-dose, long-term exposure) may contribute to the development of several diseases like colorectal cancer and negative health effects. This is one reason why, in many instances, cooking things for longer periods of time at lower temperatures is preferred.
➖If you're like me though, you're not going to stop eating delicious grilled meat due to fear. I love grilled chicken, steak, and beef.
➖To substantially decrease the amount of PAHs and HAs in your meats by up to 72%, marinate your meats in a planned of herbs. You'll also get a ton of added health benefits from all of the herbs. ➖Sage, rosemary, and oregano in particular contain antioxidants called carnosic acid, carnosol, and rosmaric acid which researchers have found to be particularly beneficial in these instances. You can also use parsley, basil, chives, thyme, pepper flakes, dill... whatever you'd like. Some people like using cayenne along with garlic and onion on their steaks. Personally, I don't mind any of the above with the exception of the cayenne since I don't like spicy foods.

I made this delicious dinner for my family tonight! Honey mustard roasted chicken thighs w/ brown rice and Brussels sprouts. 🌱

The Brussels sprouts were by far the best I’ve ever made! The nutritional yeast gives it a “cheesy” flavor and is full of B vitamins. 
Brussels sprouts: roasted with @primalkitchenfoods avocado oil, nutritional yeast, sea salt, pepper and parsley. 20 minutes @ 375 degrees F. 😋

Chicken thighs: whole grain mustard, raw local honey, chopped garlic, red pepper flakes, parsley, paprika, sea salt, black pepper. Roast for 30-40 minutes at 375 F.

Today my spouse @dj_saint and I are taking the Edmonds-Kingston passenger ferry to have dinner with my parents at their retirement cottage on the Peninsula. We used to make it over one weekend each season a few years back to give ourselves much needed downtime, but health issues and other obligations have kept us--okay, mainly ME--from making it as much of a priority as it used to be. However, that will be changing, and more work-life balance is definitely needed! So to honor myself and my hard-working spouse, life experiences are going to once again be a much higher priority.

How do you make sure to live a balanced life? What are things that add to your balance they maybe have fallen by the wayside that you could easily reincorporate? It could be as simple as a walk around the block to enjoy the flowers around your neighborhood, or getting out once a week to watch the sunset. There are SO MANY possibilities when it comes to cultivating a healthy work-life balance.

Onions of all types are incredibly good for you. But what makes the purple onion so special?
➖Onions belong to a family of plants called Liliaceaes which also include allium veggies that I've discussed in other posts (see my post about garlic). Allium veggies contain sulfuric compounds that contribute to their smell, taste, and are also one of the reasons onions are so damn healthy.
➖One of the most powerful flavonoids in red onions are anthocyanins, which is a powerful antioxidant that produces its red color. Many flavonoids are responsible for the anti-carcinogenic (anti-cancer), anti-platelet (anti-clot), antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory abilities of many vegetables.
➖A particular flavonoid in onions called ASCO are what's responsible for making you cry when you chop them.
➖White onions are higher in two other flavonoids when compared to red onions, but all onions contain some fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, manganese, folate, potassium, thiamine, and phosphorous.
➖Some research on the compounds in opinions within the past decade have shown potential benefit in those with diabetes (due to their ability to lower blood glucose) and respiratory disorders such as arthritis or asthma (due to their ability to crease histamines and leukotrienes -- chemicals in the body that cause pain, swelling, and allergic reactions)
➖Don't store your onions near your potatoes since potatoes emit ethylene gas and the onions will absorb them, causing them to spoil faster. Keep your onions and potatoes separate and out of the fridge. When you refrigerate onions, it may cause them to spoil sooner.

My top 4 tips for balancing your microbiome and healing your gut. ⠀

1️⃣ Take time to chew your food properly. The larger the pieces you swallow, the more difficult it is for you to digest which can then lead to other digestive problems.⠀
⠀
2️⃣After you eat a meal, relax  3-4 minutes after eating. This could look like enjoying a glass of wine, chatting with a loved one, or just simply taking the time to be mindful. (However, put the phone down, no scrolling or checking your email). When you rush off after a meal it stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and turns off digestion. You need time to make all the HCL and enzymes to digest your food. Without proper amounts of HCL & enzymes, food will pass through your digestive tract undigested. ⠀

3️⃣Make sure you’re properly hydrated. Ultimately you need water to make hydrochloric acid (HCl) to digest food and if you’re dehydrated, you’re not going to be able to make enough acid to digest food properly. If you’re struggling with digestion, take amount of water you’re drinking now and double it for 3 days and then let me know how you feel. (Note: the upper limit is no more than 3-4 quarts a day -- depending on your activity level)⠀

4️⃣ One of the most harmless, but beneficial supplements you can take is a glutamine based powder. This feeds and heals broken cells lining the gut. Because when you’re stressed out from life, this stress stimulates a catabolic reaction which then breaks down the gut lining to release glutamine to be used for energy.⠀

Wonderful lunch in Cafe Gratitude in Munich today. Oyster mushrooms with perfectly seasoned Tzatziki in wraps made of chickpea flour. It was perfection on a plate! Why was this not only very tasty but also healthy? To start with it is gluten free and therefore not contributing to inflammation in the body. The rich filling of oyster mushrooms, salad and vegetables is chocful with vitamins, minerals and fibre. To me this dish brought moments of happiness, so it had a positive impact on hormones as well. Good for balanced blood sugar levels, this type of food can help to master migraine and chronic pain. It helped me to free myself from my migraine.

TENGO QUE HACER 5 COMIDAS:
Nuestra genética es ahorradora. Estamos preparados para pasar hambre🙊. Si no le damos alimentos a nuestro cuerpo durante más de 4 – 5 horas⏰,nuestro cuerpo entra en alerta y se disparan todos nuestros mecanismos de reserva. Ósea nuestro organismo empieza a ahorrar energía y acumular grasas para “sobrevivir”.
Pero ¿qué pasa cuando no comemos por un tiempo mucho más prolongado 16 ó 18 horas? El cuerpo necesita continuar, así que se usarán nuestras reservas inmediatas, primero la glucosa del hígado, segundo la grasa, tercero las proteínas del músculo (debemos evitarlo) 
Lo que pasa es lo siguiente☝🏼: no hay comida disponible, saco del hígado glucosa para sobrevivir, cuando esta se acaba puedo recurrir a la grasa como otra fuente de energía. ¡¡Ojo!! 👀esto se logra únicamente bajo un plan de alimentación conocido como ayuno intermitente, siempre bajo supervisión de tu nutriólogo. No todo es para todos 👩🏼‍⚕️
¿5 comidas entonces? No, forzosamente. Lo único que debes de evitar es pasar más de 5 horas sin comer y no menos de 16 horas de ayuno. Así que, si no estás bajo un régimen de ayuno intermitente, lo mejor es comer 5 veces al día🍽

I sorta had to figure this out the hard way. So wish I had learned this so much earlier that being low carb further derailed and delayed my healing journey. In fact it put me further behind as I committed staving away from carbs.😱 _______\____________\_______________________Your body also needs glucose derived from carbs as its your nervous system's preferred fuel source AND your body cannot create glucose from fats. PERIOD.

What we need to be aware of is if you are involved in exercise and/or sport we need to understand that it is VITAL that our energy systems need carbs and if we deprive the body we will see negative consequences ( I can certainly attest to this. I tried so hard to lose weight and in fact gained weight by denying my body carbs - which was the fuel source it was looking for!
———————————————————Important things to note about carbs:
✔️fruit breaks down to fructose which is stored as liver glycogen - limit 1 to 2 servings per day
✔️if your exercising you want sources of muscle glucose ( potatoes, rice and oatmeal etc)
✔️carbs are necessary for optimal thyroid and hormone function
✔️we hold 3g of water for every gram of glycogen we store - so realize its just water weight when you see the when you see the scale fluctuate
✔️ our body tends to respond best to gradual increase in carbs - go slowly in small increments

Below is my current recipe for this deliciously creamy, energy boosting, brain fuel - without all the junk.

12-16 ounces hot coffee*
1 tbsp grassfed butter or ghee
3 tbsp coconut cream**
1/2 scoop @equip.foods Prime chocolate protein powder
1 pinch of sea salt
•
Combine all ingredients and blend with a blender/immersion blender. Let cool on the counter or in the freezer (I like to spend this time getting ready for the day 💁 or chasing my kids around #momlife). Once cooled, add ice!

**Optional swap: 1 tbsp coconut or MCT oil

If you're feeling exceptionally adventurous add in a packet of your favorite @foursigmatic elixir before blending.💣💥

I'm kinda in lazy season of cooking, probably because it's  getting warmer and I just wanna be outside! 🏔️ Lots of the same things, prepared with different flavors, etc... (Sheet pan meals, anyone???) The timing of egg reintroduction couldn't be better! Let me just tell you, these waffles from @kitchfix are bomb and I found them recently at @sprouts (they do also have flaxseed in them, so just keep that in mind if you're not doing seeds). This seasoning blend from @traderjoes is where it's at, and I have been putting this shiz on errrrrthing. Now, excuse me while I go polish this off in the sunshine. ☀️

finally had time to make a legit dinner last night👌🏽 shrimp fra diavolo 🔥 that is seriously to die forrrr. 🍤 It’s a @giadadelaurentiis recipe that my dad makes often & since it’s sO amazing & pretty healthy I decided to give it a go. I think it’s one of my favorite recipes, sOo goood & light & spicy 🌶 with a warm kale & roasted tomato salad, sweet potatoes with a paleo garlic rosemary aioli (also to die for, will share recipe soon) & roasted asparagus 😋😋 Recipe 👇🏽
1 pound large shrimp peeled
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
3 tablespoons olive oil, plus 1 to 2 tablespoons
1 medium onion, sliced
1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 cup dry white wine
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
3 tablespoon chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves
3 tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves
Toss the shrimp in a medium bowl with 1 teaspoon of salt and red pepper flakes. Heat the 3 tablespoons oil in a heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and saute for about a minute, toss, and continue cooking until just cooked through, about 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer the shrimp to a large plate; set aside. Add the onion to the same skillet, adding 1 to 2 teaspoons of olive oil to the pan, if necessary, and saute until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juices, wine, garlic, and oregano. Simmer until the sauce thickens slightly, about 10 minutes. Return the shrimp and any accumulated juices to the tomato mixture; toss to coat, and cook for about a minute so the flavors meld together. Stir in the parsley and basil. Season with more salt, to taste, and serve. Enjoy!

@tagmania is a familiar face at Snake River. He is a husband, father, firefighter, woodworker, and #firedancer.  On top of coaching general classes, he works with young athletes, developing their skills to perform better in sports. @tagmania is a familiar face at Snake River. He is a husband, father, firefighter, woodworker, and #firedancer . On top of coaching general classes, he works with young athletes, developing their skills to perform better in sports. We joke the only thing bigger than Andrew’s pecs, is his heart, as he also launched SRCF’s original program, Special Edition. The program provides children with special needs a fun, positive, safe, and consistent environment to be social and active. He’s been linchpin in our staff, community & integral in the growth of Snake River. . . . Andrew originally joined us four years ago after moving from California (don’t hold it against him) looking for a place to help him become #fitandsexy . Little did he know that goal would lead him to find his gorgeous wife @briannetaghdiri and a career he loves with @meridianfiredepartment . Had to try the iced lil vamp latte for my beet juice antioxidant fix 👊🏻. @malkorganics is my favorite nut milk, there are zero fillers or emilsifiers...only water and nuts in most of them!
