Lol all joking aside this IS the face of a poacher, like I said doesn’t matter if it’s a inch or a mile doesn’t matter if your keeping them or putting them back, illegal water is illegal water period. You got caught and you should man up, but trying to explain that’s to a hack is mind numbing lol. #norespect#poacher#steelhead#floatfishing#hack#respectthefish
KING OF THE DRIFT - The Original Steelhead Tournament Series
Part 2: Hustle & Grind
With the meeting over anglers rushed to their spots and waited till 6:30 which was the set time for the tournament to start. Once the time came it was game time. Floats were cast and the grind began. And when I say grind, I mean it was going to be and absolute grind. Like I stated before in part 1, the Friday prior conditions were a tad better and reports of anglers catching were decent. But before I had left the house to head up north i took a peek at the flow chart and the worst had happened….it spiked.
So as the sun began to rise I suited up in my waders and hauled my camera gear to the river. As I made it closer and closer I finally saw her. And it she wasn’t pretty. Water was high and muddy. It had maybe 4-6 inch visibility and pumping. I didn’t get to actually get a temperature but it was also pretty cold. That’s when I knew it was definitely going to be a grind for the anglers to manage 1 fish let alone 2. But that’s what fishing is all about, learning to adapt and overcome all conditions. Plus a whole lot of luck! Getting that bait smack dab right in front of the fishes face.
As I made my way up and down the banks taking photos I could see the smiles and feel the good vibes regardless of the conditions. The batter between old friends and the new friendships being made are just some of the highlights this tournament is known for. I will be honest it was even a grind for me to get fish photos after being spoiled shooting last falls tournament. All in all the warm sunny weather made up for the tough conditions and guys seemed to enjoy just being out fishing regardless.
Last fall KOTD 128 fish were caught, this spring KOTD of the 78 participants entered only 22 fish were caught. It was definitely a tough grind but those who managed to catch had a good chance in placing. I also witnessed a lot of suckers, carp, and even a bass caught. Everything but steelhead!
