When life changes you need to make a plan and work together as a team. It’s also important to remember that you don’t have to do anything alone. There are resources out there to help you build your structure. As a Doula I am one of those resources. #strongbonds #healthyrelationships #problemsolving

Personally,I’ve gone from mindlessly eating in my late teens & eating a high carb/fat diet to eating low calories/low fat/low sugar in my early twenties (wrong direction guys) to finally learning how macros process in MY body as I made it a lifestyle (everyone is different!) I learned more when I competed in a few fitness competitions and carried that forward with me as a continued lifestyle.  Became pregnant/had a baby and managed to use my knowledge from prior experiences to assist in gaining strength post partum

I’ve experimented with carb cycling, intermittent fasting, bodybuilding type nutrition, macronutrient counting. People often ask what macros to eat, if IF will work, when to carb cycle etc. The answer is, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. How to truly understand what works for you requires you to remain consistent and diligent with whichever method you choose to practice. What do I do now as a full time, working mom? I consider this a lifestyle as I have accumulated knowledge through these experiences. I’m able to loosely track macros mentally without tracking BC I’ve done it in the past. I don’t live by an app, book, Tupperware. What did help? My Fitness Pal helped me understand what my intake initially was. What you think has high protein isn’t often “high” protein or what you think is low carb is not always “low” carb. I am NOT telling you that you should live by an app or that your composition can only change by this, I’m saying it’s out there and I operate in a way that requires numbers and I truly love the science behind the nutrition. People sometime get obsessed with it and it’s not a pretty road from what I hear. lucky for me - that wasn’t the case. I was just amazed 🤓

A healthy lifestyle not only changes your body, it changes your mind, your attitude, your mood, and possibly your whole life. I know it def changed mine! One of the greatest lessons I've learned is appreciating my body at EVERY shape. I remind myself that this is a LIFESTYLE (and one I've happily chosen) so there's no point in making myself miserable. There is no finish line, the goal is to keep learning and evolving!

All the pregnancy feels lately. But instead of feeling defeated, I feel Empowered. Knowing that the most “uncomfortable” or “painful” part has yet to come, does not worry me or scare me. It actually makes me smile because I know our bodies are made for this. Ive been preparing myself and my body for labor. Not just mentally but physically. 💪🏼
Still have so much to learn and to do. But Gods grace is insurmountable. 🙏🏼

April is Caesarian awareness month. About 1/3 of all babies in the US are born via Caesarian delivery! This c-section rate is far higher than the WHO recommends, and other parts of the world.
This common abdominal surgery saves lives but is also used when it is not medically necessary, and it impacts mothers for life.
Although a scalpel does not cut through the rectus muscles, the fascia that is attached to them is opened, and then the muscles are separated from the fascia by pulling the apart. This causes an abdominal separation. 
So whether it is an incision or a pulling apart, the results seem to be basically the same. A separation of the fascia needs to be either reconnected by healing on its own or through stitches.
Nerves are damaged by the multiple incisions and separations, which impacts a woman’s core function.
For her to heal properly, she needs rehabilitation but most moms are sent home with no more instruction than to lift nothing heavier than the baby for 6 weeks.
If she had knee surgery, she would have pre and postoperative care with weeks of physical therapy. 
With a c-section, she not only has to heal with little guidance but also take care of her newborn child.
We feel that moms need more support and our postpartum corrective exercises can help her heal faster and more completely.

Dr. Verny, author of Nurturing the Unborn Child, says, “sensation, feeling, and thought—immerse the unborn child in a primordial world of experience, continuously directing the development of the mind.” One way shown to help combat stress and promote a sense of calm is exercise! Why not immerse the unborn child in all those good feelings exercise brings!? One way to incorporate physical fitness and create a deep bond with your unborn baby is by using Fit For Birth’s Labor Training™. Taught in our Corrective Exercise Specialist course, Labor Training™ was originally developed to train the pregnant mom and baby for the rigors of childbirth - mentally, emotionally, and physically.

So, I’ve totally been MIA on social media (it’s kind of awesome) but I promised to share my birth story with Miss Olivia. 
Before beginning, both my births were fast. No matter how you’ve given birth it can be traumatic. I kept pretty quiet about my birth story with Alexander because a ton of women shamed me for having a fast birth — as if I had any control over that 🙄— and negated any trauma I experienced from his birth. It’s not a competition. I understand that if you had a long birth, a fast one sounds like a dream. I’m not trying to dim your light, this is just my experience. 
Labor started about 2pm. Same as with Alex. Only this time, I didn’t know what I was experiencing was contractions. It felt like Olivia was trying to hulk her way through my pubic symphysis. Contractions are typically back and abdomen. Everything and everyone told me it was just her head bumping into my pelvis. So I went about my day: I played with Alex, I took Mousse to the groomer, I texted with friends, I picked Mousse up from the groomer — all while having contractions. 
I was in so much pain... probably a 7 or 8 on my pain scale. I’m like what is this girl doing? I remember arriving at the groomer, walking to Alex’s car door, stopping for a contraction (didn’t know at the time, I just knew I was in pain), then unbuckled him and headed inside. The ride home from the groomer suuuuuuucked. 
Gus gets home from work an hour or so later. He’s concerned. We call our doula — @angiebeehotz and she asks us to time it for a half hour. As that’s happening, I’m just resting on my stability ball. Gus thinks I might be in labor, and I don’t know... the contractions felt very different from Alex. Somewhere in all of it I have a contraction in the kitchen and I just looked at Gus and said, “I think we need to go.” We leave the house at about 6:30pm. I only know this because I sent a few text messages. 
We arrive at the ER (as directed to by L&D). A nurse takes me upstairs while Gus parks the car. He also has Alex with him. The nurse takes me to triage and I’m getting asked all sorts of questions. One nurse says “we can do this later, we need to get her a bed.” More in comments...

This video sums up my swim at the Sobe Triathlon race yesterday; this is at the end of it and you might not hear my first words getting out of the water —-> “ I AM ALIVE !! “. 😂😂😂😵😵😵 What an adventure! What I thought it could be a lovely stroll in the ocean became a huge challenge; winds were super strong and ocean was very angry with currents and big waves. I had the option to leave it but I wanted to give a first lesson and good example to my little girl in the womb. Sometimes plans don’t go as expected and we have to rough it up and fight for our goals. My will was stronger than my fear and despite being the hardest swim I have ever experienced , I accomplished my goal and I am very proud of myself. Though exercise has never been linked with any pregnancy complications, it is often first thing to be dropped if any concerns arise!

Research shows that women put on bed rest for three weeks or more suffer high levels of physical, emotional, and familial hardship. 
In those cases, the lack of movement is what caused problems.

I remember taking this picture and thinking I still wasn’t “myself” again. I wasn’t lean enough. My skin was still not as tight as before. Looking back, I’m now thinking..”was I crazy?!.” You are always your biggest critic and that goes for not only fitness/appearance but motherhood. Aside from trying to snap back and feel like me again, we constantly question if we are parenting well, if what we do for our babes is right/good/enough. It’s raising another human for crying out loud. IT IS HARD ALREADY

You will be judged if you work, you will be judged if you dont
•
You will be judged if you breastfeed, but you will also be judged if you bottle feed
•
You will be judged if you take a bit longer to feel like yourself again after having a baby, but you will also be judged if you get back on the grind soon after

Basically, you will be judged either way. Motherhood is already hard enough without all the opinions coming our way; it is a time of transitions and discovery. There is NO right versus wrong; there is what works FOR YOU and what DOESN'T! You do you & APPLAUD yourself through the process. #throwback

Yesterday's post excluded one of the most important parts of my 10 day detox. Flow Water! While at our sons swim class I was downing a fresh box and mentioned to hubby how refreshing it was. This was the perfect time to take a pic but I was NOT prepared for it...hence no makeup. Ah well, it's about the product and the detox so figured I'd post it anyways. Looks like I have a Flow glow😊

Women in Africa do not suffer this same high risk of death. Neither do their infants.
One major factor that increases the risk of maternal death for black women is stress!
From the New York Times: “For black women in America, an inescapable atmosphere of societal and systemic racism can create a kind of toxic physiological stress, resulting in conditions — including hypertension and pre-eclampsia — that lead directly to higher rates of infant and maternal death.”
Methods of stress reduction for pregnant women are integrated in our Pre &Post Natal Corrective Exercise Specialist course. We know how essential this is for positive, healthy birth outcomes.
But it’s still not taught in most pre and postnatal fitness certifications!

Today I had so much fun spending time with @nikki_q24 doing some belly sifting and tootsie rolling to help encourage her little one to come earth side. The rebozo is such a great tool to use not only prenatally to help create more space for your baby to get into an optimal position, but it can provide great comfort and pain relief during labor! Client spotlight! 👀Here's another one of my favorite clients, Kim! Kim came to me about a year and a half ago, 2 months into her first pregnancy. She was already conditioned with her cardio but wanted to get stronger, more toned and overall stay fit during her pregnancy. We worked specifically on strengthening her core unit, pelvic floor and glutes to train her body for labor. Kim almost never misses a session and she works HARD. I pushed her pretty hard during her pregnancy and her dedication paid off- her total labor time was around 5 hours (correct me if I'm wrong kim!) and she was back in the gym 8 days later. (For reference, a typical first time labor is usually anywhere from 12-72 hours)She never ceases to impress me with her coordination, strength and drive, and she always has a stellar attitude and has become a great friend of mine. One critical period of neuronal growth is the first three months after conception, when each building block or nutrient must be present when the DNA/RNA blueprint calls for it…If they are not there, synthesis stops.

What a woman feels as “tightness” is often not a short muscle in need of stretching, but a weak muscle elsewhere. 
During pregnancy, women have extra hormones that keep her flexibility even higher than usual. 
It is the preparation for loosening ligaments, tendons, and muscles for childbirth. 
Though stretching can be beneficial, taking an already-overstretched body and stretching it even more during pregnancy can push mom down the path of muscle imbalance and postural misalignment. 
Teaching appropriate flexibility is challenging because a woman can be too flexible, yet feel tight. The feeling of tightness in the hamstrings, for instance, can often be attributed to an underlying weakness. 
It’s relatively common for a woman’s gluteal muscles and lower abdominal muscles to be weak, which allows the pelvis to “pour forward.” This pulls the hamstrings like a rubber band, making them feel tight because they are long and tight, not short and tight. 
Although it feels good at the time, further stretching actually worsens the imbalance and misalignment.

Women all over the world are stretching the heck out of their hamstrings when they’d actually feel a lot less tightness by strengthening their butt muscles or lower abdominals instead.

Whether it’s called visualization, mental imagery, mental practice, or mental rehearsal, research for nearly a century has proven conclusively that “if you’ve been there in the mind, you’ll go there in the body.” Most women have been so overtly scared-to-death about childbirth that negative imagery may exist more than positive imagery in their minds.

I planned a low intensity program for today. Jaxon planned an even lower one. He wanted to play cars on the mat but I wasn't giving up! So when your toddler decides he doesn't want to play anywhere else...you plank!

Planks are a great exercise to do anywhere. Core strength is key at any point in our lives. I'm not talking about flat stomachs and abs...just a strong core. Planks also help with posture, back pain and balance. Pre natal mamas should  do side planks as a better option for your growing baby bump.

I was raised very humbly growing up. Zero silver spoon or luxury vehicle that appeared at 16, and for that I am grateful. Here is another home workout for you, using minimal to no equipment. Anytime I am holding a plate or dumbbell in this video you could also be holding your baby! Utilizing your diaphragmatic breathing correctly through this entire workout (or any workout) makes for it an amazing prenatal or postnatal workout routine. With the last exercise, I would have preferred a longer foam roller, but you get the picture. These exercises challenge your core in multiple directions and help to strengthen your kinetic chain to stay strong and avoid injuries in the future. Try this one out for yourselves! Complete honesty: this pregnancy has kicked my butt. I feel weak, out of shape and unable to perform basic exercises that I use for clients who are just beginning an exercise program. I've been able to do some cardio but spent most of my time stretching and trying to open my hips and relieve my severe sciatica pain. My glutes are tight, my hips are tight, my back hurts, my muscles are weak and training is what my body needs but refuses to do. I'm frustrated, but I won't give up. Pregnancy affects every woman differently and I know I can regain my strength. For those of you struggling, know that not everyone can continue training like they used to. Everyone else ➡️ this may interest you - I can’t even tell you how often I hear someone at the end of the workout say something like “I need to do more abs, I want to get a 6-pack.” The key to ab definition is the visibility of the ab muscles. You can do a million sit-ups, crunches and it can have zero effect on ab definition. When ppl ask me the best exercise for abs I tell them table push-aways. 😂. It’s not a joke, it’s the truth. If you want visible abs, eat better and train more but, but don’t just train them alone

The idea of working the core to obtain visible abs is one of the oldest misconceptions in training. This goes back to the old idea of spot reduction. Spot reduction will never work. You can’t decrease the fat layer on a particular area by working that area

Want better ab definition? 1 way - finish every workout with some hard interval training instead of extra sit-ups or crunches. Interval training (HIIT) contributes to fat loss and the resulting definition. Interval training burns more calories at rest (google EPOC)

Ab training has its place and may potentially reduce the diameter of the waistline, but will do very little to reduce bodyfat. The truth is, there are many reasons to perform core training. A strong core is one of the keys in the prevention of back pain and impt in a preconception period (aka getting the core strong before entering pregnancy). A strong core will help you improve performance but, sit-ups or any other direct ab exercise will not reduce bodyfat

A satisfactory core program is more than crunches. Most of your core work should be isometric exercises like planks (again, pregnant or post-partum - DO NOT DO THIS). One of the major functions of the core is the prevention of motion. What does that mean? It means that the abs are stabilizers. Work on the stability function instead of flexion/extension. Don’t mind the face here 😝, clearly beat the sun up this AM. 🙈

Swimming last week was absolutely awesome! Despite getting slower 🐢🐢🐢 and heavier 🐳🐳🐳 , I still managed to do 1 mile in 45 minutes. Being already + 21 pounds, water is getting the only place I can still somehow feel comfortable. I’m very lucky to be able at 29 weeks to still work and train 4-5 times a week between weight training, swimming and spinning. Haven’t started any prenatal classes yet but it’s probably a good time now. Time is ticking!! ⏰🤰🏼 It’s pretty amazing how my body is changing, my belly is getting huge, I feel swollen all over, I start to notice cellulite and I’m pretty much always exhausted 😵😆 but I look at my body as a vehicle to bring the miracle of life, I feel very happy and grateful for this healthy pregnancy and amazing journey! #pregnant #healthypregnancy #fitpregnancy #29weeks #pregnantswimming #swim #nuotoingravidanza #gravidanza #nuoto #fitforbirth #preggolife #thirdtrimester #mamatobe #miami #brickell #swimlove #prenatalfitness #prenatal

Breathing is an essential part of childbirth and different breathing techniques are a common part of childbirth classes. 
But it affects much more than just labor and delivery.  Breathing is the foundation of one’s core, parasympathetic stress relieving response, and cellular nutrient/toxin exchange. 
The power of diaphragmatic breathing can include: joint pain relief, speedy postpartum tummy recovery, core stability and the foundations for rehabilitations like C-sections, diastasis and pelvic girdle pain / sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction.

Sub-optimal breathing is a major stress to the body.

It is literally straining to the musculo-skeletal system about 20,000 times per day (the approximate number of times that the average person breathes in a day). Consider now that the diaphragm muscle is top of the totem pole in human muscle function, just like the heart muscle.  What would happen if your heart wasn’t quite strong enough to pump blood effectively through the body? 
First, the brain would say, “I’m going to die if I don’t find a work-around ASAP,” and then a chemical stress response would initiate.  Second, the brain would do everything in its power to activate secondary helper muscles, effectively placing strain up and down the entire kinetic chain.
