May 14-20 is Mental Health Awareness Week. I first discovered yoga in desperation to ‘fix’ my crooked back from being in chronic pain. Years later in 2004, after my first born at 3 months old started showing signs of physical decline, I found yoga again. He spent three weeks in the hospital and almost died, due to a very rare kidney disorder that took a while to diagnose. Later he was diagnosed with autism, my daughter with the same kidney disorder, and then in 2010 my youngest received his own autism diagnosis. Throughout this rocky time I immersed myself in YTT and received my yoga teacher training certificate. I began to teach; this, along with deepening my own practice, literally kept me from dismantling. Yoga was my lifeline as a mom, and as I processed my guilt and stress it helped me relocate my anchor and forgive myself. As a highly sensitive person prone to anxiety and adrenal fatigue, I continually need an outside spiritual discipline to help me remain physically strong, mentally sound and emotionally regulated. I thank God for yoga and how it literally saved me and helped me find my own strength. I love teaching it and guiding people towards all of its many benefits. If you suffer from a mental health condition or have a hard time regulating the stress in your life, yoga may be the answer like it has been for many people for thousands of years. Mental health is a precious gift, and the journey finding it can be the best treasure of all towards understanding yourself and extending compassion within and then out to others. #mentalhealthawareness#mentalhealthmatters#yogatherapy#yogaforlife#wellness#practicemindfulness#personalpractice#pracefulwarrior#primaryfood#forgiveness#findyour8020#ptsdrecovery#inthetrenches#autismmom#survivor#grateful#scoliosissupport#whyiyoga
We took this pic last summer, at the spot where we met: the Pike Place Market in Seattle, on a beautiful May Day back in 1998. Today 5/2/18 marks 20 years since that moment when time stopped for us both. I never believed in love at first sight and only had a hope/ dream of a ‘soul-mate’ back when I was 23, about to turn 24. Our soul-mate journey and love story has had its fair share of hard downs and big ups, with everything in between. I believe that love conquers all when two people are equally committed to looking at all the aspects of ‘love,’ and that includes the not very pretty parts. When two people are hell-bent on becoming better for themselves, the other, and for what my mom calls the ‘third person’ in a relationship: the couple itself. It took some time for us to embrace being uncomfortable and feeling grief/ hurt/discomfort/pain/and really commit to learn and grow from them. Through forgiving myself and us for many things early on in our fast-paced relationship, I know now that that’s the sacred and sometimes scary place when true love happens. These two decades have been the real deal, not just the cookie-cutter romance novel ideal. The good news is that we still really like each other even after confronting the demons and breaking old patterns to create new, sustainable and amazing ones. Here’s to a modern-day love story and a blast to the past where it all started. We’re ready for the next twenty years to be full of some epic fun and adventure, because #wemadeit ❤️. #twentyyearsstrong#lovewins#marriagegoals#hardwork#emdrtherapy#growth#reallove#wellness#soulmate#primaryfood#commitment#trust#mistakes#findyour8020
I am on a mission to help women loosen up the grip we hold on the scale: we chase a number or a sliding scale of numbers our whole life, and it can make us feel disempowered. What if you could see a ‘snapshot’ into your unique metabolism? Our InBody scale does just this. We are all comprised of water, muscle, and fat, and the ratios all affect our body composition and ultimately our total weight. 🤜
See my example below of a 5’10 woman in her early 40s who comes to our clinic. The top reading is from 2/22/18; the bottom from 4/15/18. At first glance she is up 1.2 pounds - until we take a closer look. She is actually down in fat and up in muscle and water, which helped her body fat percentage go down. 🤜
Here are her stats between the two readings... 💫weight: 1.2 lb gain;
💫dry lean muscle: .7 lb gain;
💫water: 2.2 lbs;
💫fat: 1.7 lb loss;
💫PBF (body fat %): 1.3 point loss - from 18.8 to 17.5%.
We are more than just our weight! Understanding body metrics can help us feel empowered as we see our metabolism shifting and moving with all of the hard work we do to get healthy - and stay that way. Visit Protea if you are curious about what’s going on with your body: for $15, you can get on the scale and go over results with a member of our staff. Take charge today rather than let weight stay in charge of you.
Your perception is your own. You may look at the same thing / experience as someone else, and perceive two different things. This is not a flaw. The other person may not be wrong .... we perceive things from our own lens and our own vision. My right eye has always had a brown speck in it: How has this colored my vision? Compassion and understanding can go a long way towards respecting and honoring another’s view, even while expecting your own unique eye - which may have a different hue or angle - to also be honored. How can we practice this in our daily lives? I firmly believe that we can open up channels of empathy by embracing this philosophy. Every day I try a little bit more to see from the eyes of another: if I can’t see the same thing, to respect it as different from mine yet worthy. 🙏 #perceptionshift#sight#empathy#understanding#walkinanothersshoes#vision#individuality#findyour8020#selfcare#wellness#goals#tryeveryday#selfimprovement
Having a #reallyreal moment here. Self-esteem issues get the best of us. Insecurity about how we look, our weight, etc can plague even those of us in the profession of helping people lose weight. There sometimes is a battle between emotions and intellect (or knowing that I’m not ‘fat’ but feeling not quite in control of cravings etc due to low cortisol and a period of stress. Therefore, my emotions sabotage my brain). It makes me a relatable nutritionist and also a human being who needs to check myself and build myself up before self-doubt turns a corner. There are seasons and reasons for life, choices, nutrition, working out, etc and the key is to recognize the ups and downs and remember how strong you are: recall how well you know yourself so you can steer yourself back on track. Up 5 pounds and 2 body fat percentage points or not. 👍🏼#selfdoubt#relatability#weightlossjourney#wellness#insecurity#bodyasasystem#fuelup#selflove#checkyourself#findyour8020#sugardetox#selfsabotage#healthcoaching#loveyourself#weighisjustanumber
February was a huge month of major personal/emotional highs and lows. I am starting March resolved to spend a bit more time getting ‘done’: fewer messy buns and leggings, to reflect my new attitude of change and blossoming as we move into Spring. Of course, I teach seven yoga classes a week and also see patients, so scrubs and yoga pants are a major part of my life. For the other times, though, I will take some time to dip into my wardrobe and present my put together self, ready to greet the world. #springintospring#getdressed#change#newseason#springclean#selfcare#wellness#findyour8020
Wouldn’t a weekly - or even monthly - Self Care Spa Day be heavenly? A chance to pause, recenter, refresh and reset? Life however has other plans for most of us, especially us caretaker types. Instead of waiting for the ‘perfect’ time for self-care, set aside a little bit of time for it each day. Here is my 15-minute meditation spot at my gym, waiting for my daughter during her swim team practice. I feel revived and more at peace after this small, quiet moment in an otherwise busy day. #selfcare#wellness#momentofzen#holistichealth#findyour8020#meditation#mindfulnesspractice#tgif 🙏

I am extremely proud of the practice we have built. In 2006, fresh out of medical school, my husband created Protea through grit, determination, a strong work ethic, brilliant mind and clear vision to help people. He would go car to car with flyers, do free talks at Whole Foods - anything he could to get the word out. As a co-owner, I gave him my 100% belief and full support while home with a couple of babies. I am happy to now add my own vision as a nutritionist to our clinic’s mission: helping people become educated and empowered about their own health, from labs to nutrition to hormones. We offer 15 minute free consults and would love to share more. #entrepreneur#holisticnutritionist#wellness#belief#vision#naturopathicmedicine#hormonebalance#foodasmedicine#familypractice#findyour8020#joblove#followyourdreams
