Kim Rice’s “Safety Net” is now on view at the Art Center through September as a part of our “Art in Common Spaces” initiative. •
“Safety Net” is the Richmond HOLC map made completely out of zip ties. In the 1930’s as a means to boost the middle class, the US Government started marking mortgages available through a program called the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC). In a well-documented process known as redlining, government officials outlined neighborhoods on city maps and then color-coded the areas. The neighborhoods that were the integrated or non-white were deemed “declining” (yellow) or “hazardous” (red), were not considering for mortgages, Banks and insurance companies followed the example of the Federal Government and did not finance home ownership in these areas either. .
YES Refresh Yoga Center is participating in the #YoKid Move Challenge! Are you signed up for class tomorrow?! Thank you @refreshyogacenter for your support during Alexandria's #Spring2ACTion as we raise money for programs bringing yoga and mindfulness to youth.
