The Video Synthetics Aperture Radar (ViSAR) system successfully completed flight tests getting a glimpse of ground conditions through both smoke and clouds, according to a September 28 U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency announcement.

The Pentagon's DARPA may finally have the technology to give pilots an unprecedented view of the ground below where both infrared cameras and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems have failed.

According to Bruce Wallace, program manager at DARPA's Strategic Technology Office, the flight tests "mark a major milestone" toward getting to the point where DARPA "can take uninterrupted live video of targets on the ground even when flying through or above clouds." ViSAR takes the next step in radar and imaging technology by developing an extremely high frequency targeting sensor as well as a combined "electro-optical and infrared radar" (EO/IR) system to develop a more coherent picture of the battlefield.

Wallace said "the EO/IR sensors onboard the test aircraft went blank whenever cloud obscured the view, but the synthetic aperture radar tracked ground objects continuously throughout the flight." According to the project manager, "refining the ViSAR sensor's visualization software to provide operators a representation they're used to seeing is the next step in the program." "We don't want operators in the back of aircraft to need special radar training to interpret the sensor's data – we are working to make the visual interface as easy to interpret" as existing sensor displays, Wallace said.

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has selected the Schiebel S-100 Camcopter rotary-winged unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to fulfil its interim vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft system (UAS) requirement.

The RAN has awarded Schiebel a contract to provide an undisclosed number of Camcopter systems plus three-years support, the company announced on 6 February, adding that the deal had actually been signed in December 2016.

Selection of the Camcopter comes a year after the RAN issued a request for tender (RfT) for its Maritime Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System - Interim Capability (MTUASD - IC) requirement. Under this directive, the navy said it was looking for a platform to perform shipborne intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), taking in 400 nautical square miles per hour for four hours at a range of 60 n miles from the parent ship. The platform should be able to do this while concurrently carrying two payload types; such as electronic support measures and radar, or an electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor and radar.

Besides Schiebel and its Camcopter, the RAN requirement is understood to have drawn interest from Saab with its Skeldar, and from Northrop Grumman with the MQ-8C Fire Scout.

With a maximum take-off weight of 200 kg and a typical payload of 50 kg, the Camcopter has an endurance of up to six hours and a range of 180 km.

The Israeli Elbit Systems has introduced a new and improved variant of its Skylark small unmanned aerial system (SUAS) geared for maritime operations, the company announced on 15 August.

The Skylark C SUAS is billed as offering naval intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capabilities. (Elbit Systems)

Designated the Skylark C, the new SUAS offers new naval intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities to the Skylark-series that is already fielded operationally.

These capabilities include reduced visual and acoustic signatures for covert over-water vessel tracking, and a water-resistant casing that allows the Skylark C SUAS to be launched from a small boat using a catapult and recovered from the sea after a parachute landing. It is equipped with standard inertial navigation system (INS) guidance and a stabilised electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) payload.

The navalised variant of the the Kamov Ka-52 Alligator (Hokum-B) attack/reconnaissance helicopter - the Ka-52K Katran - will be equipped with a compact active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar from Russian defense contractor Radio-Electronic Technologies (KRET). KRET claims that its AESA radar will be able to operate in the millimetric wavelength for effective ground target acquisition as well as the centimetric spectrum to enable large naval targets to be detected at a range of 180 km.

The radar is also capable of detecting low-altitude aerial targets such as cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), providing data to cue onboard electro-optical devices and corresponding weapons to these targets.

Устройство такого назначения может позволять «увидеть» через его оптику, не видимый глазу ультрафиолетовый и инфракрасный диапазон. Все модели имеют разные технические характеристики, поэтому возможности у них не равноценные.
