CDB lambastes performance of intra-regional trade @newsroomgy In his remarks at the opening of the forum titled: The Dialogue on CARICOM Strategy for implementation of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) in the region, Director of CDB’s Projects Department, Daniel Best pointed out that seventeen years after the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas was signed, competitiveness in the region continues to be stymied by the “flat performance” of intra-regional trade. This he said goes beyond the typical border issues. “Behind the border issues, there’s encumbrance of the derogatory policy environment that impact market access,” Best said as he addressed participants at the opening ceremony of the two-day meeting.

I could dedicate this whole account to buildings on or near Commercial Road (and I’ve already featured quite a few!) Here’s another, also found on Nelson Street. Comfort House was built in 1932 as a clothing factory for M Levy - you may be able to see there is an echo of its original use in the current commercial occupants of the ground floor. A great example of Art Deco from architect Hume Victor Kerr, who is behind another couple of Art Deco buildings in the area, seemingly working as a successful architect between impressive military contributions in both world wars. #thedailyerection
I can’t believe I’ve never stumbled upon or sought out this shul before last week! East London Central Synagogue as it is now known has had several name changes. It began life in 1923 as Nelson Street Synagogue and is referred to as ‘the last purpose built Synagogue in London’s East End’. The exterior design is quite austere, almost factory looking, but the interior is described as ‘stunningly beautiful’. As we all know, there was a point in history when the East End boasted 150 shuls, but as the Jewish population moved on, shuls closed and congregations merged. Over the years, more than 20 congregations united under the Nelson Street shul roof, including Great Garden Street, as evidenced by the commemoration stone mounted on the external doorway seen here in final pic. Nelson Street was renamed East London Amalgamated Synagogue, then in 1975 East London Central Synagogue. In 2013 at the shul’s 90th birthday celebration, former RIBA president Prof. Maxwell Hutchinson revealed the Mayor’s Faith Buildings Fund had granted the shul £10K for a structural survey, and anticipated they would be able to apply for a grant for needed renovations. In 2015 when nearby Fieldgate St Shul closed, the Jewish Chronicle reported that East London Central was still active, and my research suggests it is still clinging on today, opening for Shabbos and the holidays. #thedailyerection
Enough is enough! 😡 I don’t want to hear about Tory cuts any longer, we need more police officers on our streets and we need to get young people off the streets and into positive activities, the fact that a gentleman was brandishing a knife in broad daylight goes to show there has been no effective deterrent or preemptive work 😡 The policy of just paying fake silver patrol cars for Tower Hamlets Homes Estates is and has been proved to be nonsense! 😡 Reopen grassroots youth provision and make projects like St John Ambulance’s RISE Project compulsory in every education setting here in Tower Hamlets before someone dies again! 💯 #Shadwell#KnifeCrime#Londoner#EastLondon#TowerHamlets#Crime#ASB#Violence @th_labour_party #E1#Local#Democracy#Resources#Safety#Community @metropolitanpolice @towerhamletsnow #❌ #🔪
