#TBT : 700 Club! Opened in 1997 at 700 Virginia St in a storage room above #JerseysAllAmericanSportsBar in #downtown /#DennyTriangle . Was short-lived but influential & one of city’s most vibrant underground niteclubs–featuring funk, jazz, soul & hip-hop musicians & DJs. Bands included: Bassackwards, Filthy Sounds, Artindapop, King of Clubs, Zony Mash, Crack Sabbath, Kultur Shock, Jumbalaya, Digable Allstars, Kaya, @reggiewatts & Martin, Battlestar Dyslexica. Also a hangout for athletes like #Supersonics Gary Payton & Vin Baker. Had a cool speakeasy/Elks Club feel–co-owner Chris Clifford didn't put up any street signs, dimly lit w/red lighting & low ceilings, gold & red chairs, charcoal carpets & card tables. It was small & got packed – the floor buckling below the crowd’s weight (sometimes 300+ ppl). One of the floor’s beams fell off the lip holding it in place & it sunk 6 inches down into Jersey’s & was propped up with 2X4s. Clifford faced constant harassment from Liquor Board & #SPD , who tried to close down Jersey’s & #700Club because they played hip-hop & catered to a largely Black clientele (part of a larger & longstanding pattern to target “urban” clubs in the city, like Sharky’s, Mezzanine, #IguanaCantina , Oscar’s, #Pier70 , #Club420 etc) He received citations for stuff like having a foosball table in wrong spot. He brought a lawsuit against the city for racial targeting, which led to a federal judge overturning a 60-year-old state law in 1999, found in violation of the 1st Amendment. Jersey’s & #The700Club closed in 2000, amid rising rents & rapid #redevelopment , & shortly after the bldg was sold (it’s now #FareStart ). While 700 Club’s influence led to similar nites at the Last Supper Club, Aro.space, I-Spy, Sit & Spin, & Baltic Room–the soul & spirit of 700 was impossible to replicate & many wondered what would happen to its music community. Luckily in 2003 Andrew “Sea Monster” Nunez opened @sea.monster.lounge in #Wallingford , which features 700 Funk, a Sat nite funk & soul party that brings many of same musicians & fans. Share yr 700 Club memories! #throwback#throwbackthursday#seattlesoul#seattlecommunity#seattle#vanishingseattle#vivaseattle
