If you struggle to feel your lats on rows and pulldowns, try this as an activation exercise before you start your back day.
The lat has no function that involves pulling the shoulder blades back, so don't try to squeeze back here.
Focus all your efforts on driving the elbow down and tight to your ribs. Disassociate from your hands (as in, don't pull from the hands) and think more about pulling from the elbow.
Remember this is an activation exercise not a loading exercise. So keep the loads really light and focus on firing up the muscle as much as possible before you start your workout.
You should be able to feel this in your lats massively if you do it right and it'll help create that mind-muscle connection that you'll need when you go into your big movements.
PS apologies for creepily looking at the camera. I was checking it was recording 😂
🥊 Thrilled to announce that I'll be working with Lee Appleyard as his strength coach leading up to his next fight in June.
💥 Lee is moving up a weight class, and we fully expect a more explosive, powerful and better conditioned fighter when he steps in the ring!
👉🏼 First session in the books this morning. We assessed mobility, flexibility and basic movement patterns. I can't wait to see how he progresses.
The Glo Festival is at Sandall Park on Saturday 21st of July. Eight Tribute acts, local artists and acoustic talent will entertain throughout the day, on three stages. It promises to be a great day out for all the family.
This should be a question you ask yourself in everything you do in relation to training.
Firstly, what's the overall goal? Is it to build mass, get lean, get strong, get fitter, all the above?
Secondly you need to think about the goal of any exercise you perform.
If your goal is to build really big legs, then the goal of a squat is to contract your quads and glutes as hard as possible against a resistance.
If your goal is to be as strong as possible with no thought to what your legs look like, the goal of a squat becomes moving the bar up and down as efficiently as possible.
This isn't to say there isn't a crossover between two goals like this - clearly if you want big legs you need to use heavy weights - and if you use heavy weights there's a good chance you'll have reasonably sized legs.
But you need to remember that everything you do is goal specific. Don't get caught up in training for someone else's goal. Stay in your own lane.
