Regrann from @geologistonboard - Here’s a great example of how rocks erode and weather with age when exposed to the elements. Three layers are clearly shown but it’s all the same rock! The bottom light layer was cut while building the road and is the least altered, making it the most useful to identify the minerals in the rock (in this case granodiorite). The middle layer shows some weathering and iron staining and the top layer shows the deepest weathering, full discoloration due to oxidation of dark iron-rich minerals like biotite and amphiboles and partial alteration of feldspars, rounding of the entire surface and deep grooves cut by water n ice wedging eroded into it ..and doesn’t hardly resemble the original rock at all!!

Yoke or waist protector, ballgame paraphernalia
.
Veracruz, Atlantic coast of the gulf of Mexico
3th-9th century AD
Diorite
Folch Collection
.
Even though it is believed that the stone yokes formed part of some rituals linked with the Mesoamerican ball game, they were not used in the actual playing of the sport. The yokes, together with other elements such as axes and palms, were figurations sculpted in stone of the objects that were used in the game. They represented the protective belts that the players wore and were probably used as grave goods in the burials of the players who had been sacrificed in the games. This game, despite its variations according to the period and the region, generally represented a battle between deities on a field that symbolised the heavens. The game consisted of passing a rubber ball through a ring placed high up using mainly the hips and the elbows. The decorative motif of the front part of this yoke recalls a batrachian, an amphibian with protruding eyes, small nostrils and a wide mouth divided by the tongue. It is a mythical animal similar to a toad that symbolises the worldly monster that stands guard at the gates of the underworld. In fact, everything that referred to the ballgame was dedicated to the underworld and for this reason both the spaces for the game and the clothing had similar symbolic elements. These elements formed part of an iconography associated with blood sacrifices, which were carried out to nourish the earth and promote fertility.

We spent the afternoon at Morne Jacqueline, an andesitic dome just north of the town of Petit Anse, after lunch (bonus photo of Dr Mel Rodgers enjoying our our dining spot). A hydrothermally altered dioritic dike is exposed at the base of the dome, conveniently located next to a hot spring. We’ve provided USF’s Rocky-the-Bull for scale. #Martinique #diorite #usf #rockythebull #volcano #PhDlife #guestgrammer

Wikipedia :: The Mount Stuart batholith underlies the Stuart Range and the nearby Wenatchee Mountains. The batholith is about 13 by 16 miles in extent. Two plutonic masses are separated by a thin screen of Chiwaukum Schist and rocks of the Ingalls Complex. The more-eastern pluton is 93 million years old, while the more-western rock mass is between 83 and 86 million years old. Exposed rock tends to be quartz diorite and granodiorite.

Located North West of the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, we find the Serapeum of Saqqara. According to archaeologists, it was the burial-place of the Apis Bulls, literally speaking the living manifestations of the Egyptian God Ptah. This necropolis found near Memphis, Egypt is believed to have been built sometime around 1300 BCE, by Ramesses II.

Ever since its discovery in 1850 the Serapeum of Saqqara has puzzled archaeologists and researchers and the tunnels that have been unearthed since have been the subject of debate among many. This majestic ancient labyrinth is home to 25 megalithic stone ‘boxes’, weighing between 70 to 100 tons. Ancient Egyptians, the builders of these incredible ‘boxes’ possessed incredible knowledge in fields such as geometry and mathematics.

Incredible ancient Precision: but how?

Part of the megalithic boxes, the 30-ton lids were made of the same blocks of stone. Upon discovery, some of these were blown open with the aid of gunpowder, only to find the inside of these giant boxes empty. Researchers have no idea what their actual purpose is now how these giant boxes were assembled thousands of years ago.

The question that the existence of these boxes raises is whether ancient Egyptians built these boxes as memorial tombs for the Apis bulls, and if so, how come no remains were found? The Apis Bulls were extremely sacred creatures to the ancient Egyptians having been one of the first sacred cults in Ancient Egyptian History. Historians believe that the Apis Bull was both a deity and manifestation of Egyptian pharaohs.

Interestingly, most of these boxes are made of rose granite, an extremely hard rock mined at a quarry located about 800 kilometers from Saqqara while other boxes were made from an even harder material, diorite, found even further away from Saqqara.

The precision of the boxes is another characteristics that has left researchers or anyone who visits the place, baffled, with deviations registering in the thousandths of an inch. Extreme precision… thousands of years ago, the question remains: How is this possible? What are we missing here? - continues in the comment section
