#36days_S for Spine
#36DaysOfTheHumanBody
.
The vertebral column (colloquially referred to as the spine) is the part of the skeleton that houses the spinal cord. It is the result of further development of the notochord after the chordates. There are four regions of the spine based on its curvature, each with slightly different vertebrae type.
.
We are actually born with 33 separate vertebrae, but as we grow, the sacral and coccygeal vertebrae fuse to form the tailbone. While the thoracic and sacral curvatures form in the womb, the cervical curvature forms after the infant learns to raise its head, and the lumbar curvature forms as a result of walking. It's amazing to me that so many major changes happen in the body during infancy, with a pretty low rate of failures!

A few more: a skycar diagram I made for reference while working on book one, followed by a map of the Tan Noz lair from book two. Then some early costume designs. The last two are family crests for the Duke of Nachdenklich and Lord Keazund
BFD: (Block flow diagram)

Casa cu dumbrava sau o dumbrava intr-o casa din dumbrava • Our @dumbravavlasiei competition entry is a project about intimacy, community, light and the joys of living away from the city. The house explores the poetry of a rather minimal and rigid plan, in which living becomes a continuous exploration of built space. #cunoima#architecture#architecturejoy#artofmapping#axo#axonometricillustration#caddrawing#diagram#diagrams
#36days_R for Right Rotator Cuff
#36DaysOfTheHumanBody
.
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and tendons in the shoulder that help maintain stability and allow movement. They arise from the scapula and connect to the top of the humerus (arm bone). They hold the ball-and-socket joint in place and enable rotation in various directions.
.
Injuries of the rotator cuff are usually caused by excessive pulling or overhead movements. Athletes who throw repetitively and music conductors are usually affected. Rotator cuff injury is debilitating and has a long recovery time. Sometimes, surgery is required. Make sure you improve your shoulder mobility to avoid stuff like this in the long run!

#36days_Q for Quadriceps
#36DaysOfTheHumanBody
.
The quadriceps is a large muscle group at the front of the thigh that is divided into 4 parts. This is why it is called the 'quad'riceps. Often referred to as just "quads", it is in fact made up of 6 different muscles that work together to mobilise the knee and hip. It maintains the stability of the knee while walking. It is the leanest muscle in the human body.
.
It is also literally the only body part I could find that starts with Q! This Q was coaxed out of the anatomy with incredible effort and artistic license. I can only watch with terror as X, Y and Z approach.

#36days_O for Ovaries
#36DaysOfTheHumanBody
.
Let's keep it simple: I asked my flatmate if she knows any fun facts about ovaries, and she said "When you get your period you wish you didn't have them". Succinct and accurate, I'd say @prachi.k.insta
.
I learned what a fundus is three weeks ago when @sonakshipandey trained me on insertion of IUDs using one of Laerdal's products, the Uterus Collection. There's a fun fact, I guess.
.
(I tried to get out of writing an actual caption because I have a cold and I need sleep. If you don't know about the female reproductive system then please go read about it because in my opinion it is the better designed reproductive system by a large margin.)

Spending the day with a bunch of 7th and 8th garders in #lakecity with the @hiphoparchitecture Michael Ford. Pictured are their #diagrams of song lyrics broken down into #rhymeschemes . @aiasouthcarolina put together this event as part of their outreach at the annual design conference
#36days_N for Nail
#36DaysOfTheHumanBody
.
The nail is a horn-like envelope covering the tip of the fingers and toes in primates. It is made of a tough protein called alpha-keratin, which is also found in hair. It has multiple functions:
1. Protecting the fingertip and phalanx from injuries.
2. Enhance precise delicate movements by exerting a counter-pressure on the soft tissue of the fingertip which increases the sensitivity of touch.
3. As a tool, facilitating an "extended precision grip" which allows us to grab even very tiny objects like splinters.
.
The growth rate of nails is determined by the length of terminal phalanges (the outermost finger bones), which means that every nail grows at a slightly different pace. The only living part of the nail is under the skin at the nail bed, which is where new growth happens.
.
I have spent the last few days sleep-deprived for a variety of reasons - illness and power outages being the main ones. Really hoping to catch up on my letters as well as my sleep this week!
