Face | Off // 3 against 3, these towers of Kwong Ming Court at Tseung Kwan O face off against one other. In the middle is a deep cavernous space (which you know I have a thing for!). In our long, hot, sticky summers, these tall blocks can almost be thought of as giant trees, providing shade from the sun. The narrow spaces between buildings also channel wind, providing an unexpected cooling element for pedestrians on the ground. Part of this cooling effect is offset by the multitude of air conditioners that are spewing hot air from all the apartments above, but I suppose no design is perfect.
Hong Kong has been experimenting with green roofing solutions to reduce electricity consumption for cooling large buildings, but a green roof collapse at a school building a few years has dampened this initiative somewhat. This is a shame, as I see so many “naked” rooftops on my flights ripe with potential!
