The Brown Betty, it’s a classic of British design - and now pouring cups of tea at @cafeatnewbreweryarts.
The original teapots were made from a red clay that was discovered in the Stoke-on-Trent in 1695. This clay resulted in a ceramic which seemed to retain heat better and so found use as the material for the teapot as early as the seventeenth century. Early pots were tall (shaped more like coffee pots), but in the nineteenth century the pots began to take on the more rounded shape of the modern Brown Betty. This distinctive shape, and the dark brown manganese ‘Rockingham’ Glaze define the Brown Betty.
In the Victorian era, when tea was at its peak of popularity, tea brewed in the Brown Betty was considered excellent.
Today the iconic Brown Betty is still made in Stoke-on-Trent, slip-cast and hand finished.
This weekend at Starfest I had a flare up of my lingering cough. The con suite could only offer me "private selection" for tea options... Fortunately @dryadtea has these tins of teabags, and I was rescued from tasteless tea-flavoured leaf dust! Guess what's going in my convention box?
The cup from before with a few pals. I tested out the larger cup on the left this morning and it is just perfect. I’m really digging handleless cups these day - both to make and to use. I’m starting to think that handles are overrated. 🤯 Maybe I shouldn’t be searching for the perfect handle, but the perfect cup that doesn’t need a handle. Light enough to be comfortable to hold, with walls thick enough to keep your beverage warm and your hand cool. 🧐

I opened the kiln last night to a sea of beautiful blue pots. I have a lot to photograph, but it’s drizzly and murky here today so the light isn’t very good. I’ll just have to settle for this moody, little cup today and try again when the sun comes out.
