:: Flower Essences and 5 Reasons to Love Them::
.
I never thought I would “be into” flower essences... until I started working with them. Only then was I able to truly see the magic of these gentle medicines, and the healing taking place within myself and those around me.
.
Recently we vended at a conference where the main question of the day was ‘aren’t these essential oils?’ So I’d like to clear that up:
.
Essential oils are extracted through a distillation process, similar to how to how alcohol is made, and is only a fraction of the plant itself. This process also takes a mass amount of plant material - sometimes hundreds of pounds of plants to make one small bottle of essential oil. These are incredibly potent medicines ~ for external use only ~ with many contraindications and safety guidelines too detailed for this post.
.
Flower essences are vibrational remedies similar to homeopathic medicines that are created from the combination of flowers, water, and sunlight to be preserved with alcohol. They are internal medicines that are safe, gentle, and effective. These remedies are working on the mind and spirit aspects of the mind, body, spirit trio.
.

:: What makes you feel the most alive? ::
.
Inspired by a phone call with a sister this morning, this has been on my mind today. What makes you feel alive? What makes you feel heard? Feel appreciated? Feel like your best self?
.
For me, it’s remembering that the simplest things can make a difference. It’s hearing a client implement what may seem like little things only to see huge results. It’s the feeling that I’m making a difference in someone’s life. That makes me so happy and teary eyed I don’t know what to do with myself, just like this little magnolia flower did a while back.
.
If there’s something you’ve been dreaming up in your heart lately, get out there and make it happen. You don’t know when it could mean the world to someone else. And as always, if you’re in need of guidance on your healing journey, don’t hesitate to reach out. 💓

:: C H A M O M I L E :: Beyond the tea bag and into the real medicine. . . Everyone knows Chamomile calms you down- I mean, I knew that when I was like a little kid (but I was also raised by hippies) however I'm pretty sure most families have some Chamomile tea around and might make a cuppa for the little ones around bedtime. . . But what about its profound impact on digestion? I consider Chamomile to be a quintessential digestive remedy, with its unique blend of carminative and bitter tonic actions, distinct anti-Inflammatory effects from the volatile oil, along with its nervine effects. . . Nervines are wonderful herbs to support digestion because they activate your parasympathetic nervous system (aka "rest & digest") and relax the sphincter muscles in the gastrointestinal tract. . . . This makes Chamomile a great herb for those who might be stressed or anxious, which then contributes to indigestion, bloating, gas or an “upset tummy” . . . Chamomile is a highly versatile plant with effects much greater than most people just familiar with the tea bags could imagine! As I say with so many remedies- it's like a formula unto itself!! . . . One of my favorite ways to take Chamomile is as a SUPER strong infusion. Fill a quart mason jar 1/2 full of the flowers, pour boiling water over it put on a lid and let it sit for 30 minutes and drink that down and chill. Holy bitter!! You’ll experience this plant’s healing power on a whole other level of depth. . . . . If you want to go further with the plants and understand how to work with them to bring that deeper level of healing + medicine into your life AND share it with the people in your community - I highly recommend you check out our Vitalist Herbal Practitioner Program. We just opened this up to new students, which only happens once a year. . . If you’re called to be an Herbalist and you’re ready to gather the skills you need to start helping other people with plant medicine then I invite you to join us. I think one of the hardest parts about leaving home is sometimes missing out on entire plant cycles. Medicinal plants are often only at their ‘peak’ for a certain window of time, and if you work with fresh plants and you miss out... welp, maybe next year!
.
Sad to say goodbye to my gardens this morning and the blooming hyacinths and rhododendrons, but I’m grateful to have taken the time yesterday to work with this beauty, California Poppy, instead of stressing about packing.
.
California Poppy is a distant relative of our beloved opium poppy, but does not actually contain opium and is a safe and gentle remedy for working with anxiety coupled with musculoskeletal pain. I use this tincture in sleep and anxiety formulas and long tattoo sessions!
.
The petals open and close with the sun, dancing through the day so sweetly you can’t help but notice. She’s cooling to hot, inflammatory conditions within the body as well as soothing irritability and frustration.
.
Embodying a sense of wholeness (even down to the fact that you harvest the whole plant rather than separating its parts), as an essence California Poppy helps one to come back to center, feel whole within one’s self, and works directly on the Sacral Chakra (our center of relations to others).
.
Although the shop is closed for now during travels, it feels good to know medicine is brewing away at home for our client apothecary. 🌼

✨HOW TO BUILD A NUTRITIVE TEA✨While many of us search the supplement aisles to round out our nutritional needs, we often forget about the many herbs out there that are not only rich in vitamins and minerals but also aid in our absorption of certain nutrients 🙌🏼 Now I’m not telling you to throw all your supplements in the trash! 😂 However, consider adding a daily nutritive tea to your regular wellness practices for a nutritional boost. I often relate to my clients that nutritive teas can help fill in “nutritional holes” in our daily diet (and we ALL have them!) ✨ Learn all about making your own nutritive tea at home in my latest article on the @herbalacademy :: How to Build a Nutritive Tea 🍵 << Link to the full article in my bio >>

I bet one of the reasons you got into herbalism is because you fell in love with the plants, right?
.
.
But that’s only half the picture of herbalism. The super important part that’s often overlooked is: the person you give the plants to!! .
.
.
It’s one thing to know a lot about herbs, but at the heart of the calling of an herbalist is to be a healer - to help people in need. .
.
.
This might be helping your family, friends, community or clients. Regardless of whether you want to be a folk herbalist or a clinical herbalist, you’ll need some essential skills to be truly effective as an herbal healer. .
.
.
How are you as the herbalist are going to interact with a person who’s asking you for help? How do you start? What do you say? What questions do you ask so you get the right information you need to give them the right remedy?
.
.
These are all questions we address in the second lesson of our complimentary Vitalist Herbalism Mini-Course .
✨🌿link in profile 🌿✨
.
.
In this free course you’ll get some of the most important skills that anyone who wants to effectively heal people with plants need to know. .
.
.
You’ll learn everything from how to communicate with clarity and compassion, the internal work to do so you’re in a good place to work with someone - to even the exact questions you need to ask every person about every condition so you can get to the root cause of the problem. .
.
.
To get started with the Holistic Intake Roadmap, follow the link in our profile and you’ll get the free video class + downloadable guidebook. Everything in there will help you start sharing the healing medicine of the plants you love with the people you love ✨🌿🙌🏽🌿✨

To answer many of your questions, no, it hasn’t taken me a month to drive across the country . . . but I wish I took longer than I did! I ran out of cell data soon after I arrived, and so posting became more challenging (and then I just enjoyed the quiet for a few weeks longer—I knew that dealing with Comcast was going to put me in a really bad mood and so I put that off as long as possible!) . But here I am. Final destination at least for now 😉 I am enrolled in my second #herbschool  and loving every second of it. . To everyone who hasn’t driven across this beautiful country, try to #findthetime . It was something that I wanted to do for years, having travelled a bunch internationally but knowing that there was tons more to explore on my own continent. (#drivingcanada  next!) . I have to admit that, before this trip, flying to Arkansas was not on my #top10list  of #placestovisit  (sorry Arkansas!) but I’ll tell you what . . . I wish I had another day or two there to #hiketheOzarks . And more time in the #PetrifiedForest  in Arizona. And more time on the #AppalachianTrail  to see the #rhododendrontunnel . And that doesn’t even count the states that I didn’t pass through this time! . So #exploreyourborders . Don’t skip the #localstuff . Take #daytrips  or #weekendtrips  or #airbnbinyourowncity . Whatever you can afford (camp for 20 bucks/night with @hipcamp! Eat at diners and #foodtrucks ! #Eatpie  for 3 days in a row 😋). The least expensive days and nights on my trip were, by far, my favorite. . And #drivefordays  if you get the opportunity. When you go from #mountainstowinecountry  and #foreststoplains  and #deserttoconiferouswoods  all within a week, there is no way not to #appreciatethisplanet  that God has provided for us. . And once you appreciate it, beyond that, I hope that your travels will #inspire  you as they did me to find ways to #respectandsustain  these intricate ecosystems, and to think about ways in which you can give some of your own #preciousgifts  back. . #clinicalherbalism  here I come.
I am beyond excited to be taking clinical@herbalism this semester. L👀K! My herbs came!!!! #clinicalherbalism #innerrhythmbodyworks #nutritionalcounseling #appliedclinicalnutrition #herbsforhealth #yes #utica
Yep, this is a picture of snot. And you're wondering why would I ever show this to you??!! To share a little wisdom about mucous and how to read what's going on with your body by what's coming out of it.
.
.
As a clinical herbalist, I'm used to talking to people about their bodily fluids all the time - snot, poop, pee, and more I won't go into here... (I'm glad my mom, who's a nurse, got me used to talking about bowel movements at a young age!) This stuff is kinda taboo in our culture to talk about, but as holistic practitioners it's essential information that the body is offering up.
.
.
In the traditional systems of Vitalist Herbalism, we pay attention to the constitution of a person - are they hot, cold, wet, dry, relaxed, or tense? .
.
• Cold conditions are indicated with white discharge and a white coating on the tongue. .
.
• When you see yellow and orange colors, that's an indication of a hot condition. .
.
• Green often is seen when there's an infection of some type or in cases of extreme heat. .
.
• With clear mucous and a constant runny nose, you're looking at a relaxed tissue state. .
.
• When there's no mucous, or when there's just no expectoration of mucous in the lungs and the fluids are caked on the membranes, you've got a dry tissue state.
.
.
Why is all of this important to know? This information will completely change how you choose your herbs. .
.
You'll be able to determine whether someone needs cooling, moistening herbs like Licorice, Marshmallow or Slippery Elm. Or whether they need warming drying herbs like Thyme, Elecampane, Lomatium, or Garlic. .
.
Use this information and apply the proper herbs to match the energetics of the person and you'll have much better success. In fact, you can actually exacerbate someone's condition by giving them the wrong herb!!
.
.
If you want to learn how you can become more specific & precise in your selection of herbal remedies check out our free mini-course on Vitalist Herbalism up now in the link in our profile ✨🌈🔥💧🌿🌬✨

When someone comes to you who’s sick and asking for your herbal help, have you ever gotten stuck on figuring out which herbs to give them when they’ve got so many different symptoms?
.
.
It can be super easy to get tunnel vision on the symptoms you see. The cough, the stuffy nose, the urinary tract infection, digestive bloating, or the eczema can dominate your vision and lead you to loosing sight of the wholeness of the human.
.
.
You might end up giving some Osha for the cough, Horseradish for the stuffy nose, Uva-Ursi for the urinary tract infection, some Fennel for the digestive bloating, and Burdock for the eczema... Sound familiar?
.
.
But what if you could simplify the way you use herbs and be more effective while you’re at it? .
