Today in Kundalini Yoga Class with Aimee S. @jarosa_studio, we did the P-Fruit Set. Aimee said that she was inspired by my upcoming detox workshop on Sunday to also do something detoxing. (Thanks for the plug, Aimee!) But doing the P-Fruit Set (in which you do the practice with a fruit that starts with P – we used pears – then eat the pear at the end) inspired me to talk about something not often thought about in health and detox. At the end when we eat the pear, we are instructed to meditate on how the pear is infused with healing properties, which enter us when we eat it. This is instrumental in eating for health. Not that we all have to hold our food while we do yoga before we eat it, but that our thought patterns change the way we internally respond to food. If we believe what enters our body is healing, it will be more powerfully healing than something we believe to be poison. My favorite evidence of this is the “Shake Study” in which 46 people were given the exact same shake on separate occasions. The first time they were told it was a high-fat, indulgent milkshake, the second time they were told it was a low-fat diet shake. Both occasions the hormone, ghrelin, was measured before and after consumption of the shake. Ghrelin is a hormone that signals hunger. When we are satisfied after we eat ghrelin goes down. Across the board, the participants’’ ghrelin declined after consuming what they PERCEIVED as indulgent and had almost no change in ghrelin when they consumed the “diet” drink. I officially finished my 21 day cleanse 2 days ago. I definitely feel cleaner, brighter, lighter as promised. But, for me, the most important part of doing a #standardprocess21daycleanse is the return to good habits. I'm now back in the habit of making a smoothie filled with veggies instead of grabbing whatever “health bar” I picked up at the grocery store. I've become reaccustomed to making every bit if food from scratch. Good habits are what leading a healthy lifestyle is all about. Sometimes, it just takes a 3 week “boot camp” to get back that lifestyle, or to even realize that you had strayed from it on the first place. 
Now that I'm off the cleanse, it doesn't mean my body isn't detoxifying itself. The detoxification pathways in our bodies are running all the time and doing a cleanse like this one just removes some of the backups in the system so it can catch up a bit. Sweet potato muffins! Soooo yummy and moist. No refined sugar, no refined flour. Working on cleanse friendly recipes! An even better substitute for the coconut sugar and maple syrup (during the cleanse) would be mashed, steamed apples (aka applesauce) 🤣

RECIPE:

1 cup GF flour
1 cup oat flour
3/4 cup coconut sugar
1/4 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup coconut oil 
1 pastured egg
3 tbsp flax meal
1 small-med baked sweet potato
1 tbsp coconut milk (or organic whole milk)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp pumpkin spices
1/2 tsp cinnamon 
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda 
1 tsp unrefined salt 
Mix all dry ingredients separately and fold them into the wet ingredients. Grease a cupcake tin and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 min. Lemme know how they turn out!! XOXO

Above is my Purification “Ice Cream” that I make on the nights when I want a little treat during purification (or really any night). It’s how I have my last shake of the day. I use frozen organic cherries, half of an avocado, a bit of organic raw cacao powder, 2 scoops of SP Complete, half a scoop of Prebiotic Inulin and some coconut milk. All that goes in the blender and you get a nice thick, frozen chocolate cherry dessert that you eat with a spoon. This is also a great thing to make for yourself when you are stressed and reaching for/craving something sugary. There’s no added sugar in this and the fat from the avocado and coconut milk should stave off the craving while giving you the nutrition you need to handle your stress. 
So far, purification is going well I’ve noticed that I feel lighter, I haven’t gotten on a scale so I don’t know if I’ve lost any weight, but I feel less “puffy” and I move easier in yoga class. My thoughts are clearer and I’m more productive during the day. 
I’ll be teaching a class about stress and its affect our bodies and what to do about it @christinanicolehealing on 4/23 at the Womb in Norwalk, CT followed by a specially designed vinyasa yoga and meditation class to naturally start moving the stress out of the system. I’ve made it to day 8 on the Standard Process purification program. Today is the first day that I feel really great. I’ve made it past the first 4 days of “withdrawal” and the mental resistance to doing the program. My mind is clear and my sleep is improved. My experience tells me that this is what I call the “sweet spot” of the program. The habits of how to eat on the cleanse and how to prepare for my day (like making sure some of my tasty flax crackers are in my purse for a snack, etc) are second nature and I know the end of my program isn’t for another 13 days so I’ve settled in. The mental resistance will return when I’m closer to the end point. My self-sabotaging voice in my head will say, “Go ahead have (insert craved food here), you’re only a day away from finishing…what’s one day?” But, for now, I’m settled and enjoying myself. 
Taking this stress and pressure off the system is great for my organs of detox, namely my liver, kidneys, large intestine, lungs, lymph and skin. But it’s not only for my organs. While they are all working happily in these conditions, that removed stress of non-mindful eating is also working on my emotional and mental well-being. I have hit the spot of a more even-keeled temper and an open heart. I am always amazed when I help patients through this program, how they are able to clear toxins from their entire lives, not only in their bodies. I have watched patients end lifelong relationships that were toxic, drop toxic jobs, etc.  It is amazing what a human can do when a stress is relieved.

Today is day 2 of my Standard Process Purification program. I’ve made my first batch of Raw, flax seed crackers in my dehydrator. They are the perfect amount of crunchy and salty and the only ingredients are flax seeds, water, salt, garlic, onion and I threw in a dash of Italian seasoning. When I help my patients through this program, which is designed to mitigate cravings, the craving that most frequently goes unsatisfied is that visceral need for a salty, crunchy thing. These crackers are the best answer that I have found while on this program. .

As my body starts to process all the garbage out, I can feel my immune system has turned on, as evidenced by the triple cold sore that broke out late last night. This is all just part of my body’s process to purge these things it was either too tired, or under nourished or stressed out to deal with. I know we don’t often think of the immune system when we think of body detoxification but clearing out pathogens that have been lurking in the dark recesses of the body is a big part of the whole thing. .

What's for dinner? Simplicity. Basil  and Lime grilled salmon with Caesar style chopped Kale salad and Spaghetti Squash Croquettes. Not gonna lie. The spaghetti squash croquettes were a bit of a 'mish'. The spaghetti squash was roasted a couple of days ago and this recipe was made up on the fly. They look ok and taste great, but their texture is a bit mushy. Also the salmon was supposed to be lemon basil but in a strange plot twist, I was out of lemons (what?!?) so lime was subbed in last minute. Happy start to #marchmadness2018

This!!! Somewhere in between the steps of blending cashews to make sour cream and grinding the walnuts for my “taco meat” that I had no idea how these flavors were going to come together. I remember looking over at Robert and saying that I only decided to make it because the picture was really pretty 😂 but now seriously regretting my decision. I was WRONG!
