Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in Frank Capra’s IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934). ⭐️
The film went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and both Gable and Colbert received Oscars for their performances. The film also won awards for Best Director (Frank Capra) and Best Writing Adaptation (Robert Riskin). ⭐️
After filming completed, Colbert complained to her friend, "I just finished the worst picture in the world.” After being nominated for an Academy Award, Colbert decided not to attend the ceremony as she was confident she would not win. Instead she planned a cross-country railroad trip. When she was announced the winner, Harry Cohn (head of a Columbia Studios) had someone drag her off the train, which hadn’t yet left the station and take her to the ceremony. She arrived wearing a two-piece traveling suit designed by Travis Banton. ⭐️
#maryastor#midnight#trivia 📽 -Converted to Roman Catholicism in 1951 following a suicide attempt. -In 1959, she penned her frank autobiography, "My Story", which was a bestseller, a tell-all in which she openly discussed her battle with alcohol and her failed marriages, but, interestingly, avoided the subject of her film career. In 1971, she also wrote five novels and came out with a memoir, "A Life on Film", in which she DID discuss her film career. This was also a bestseller. -Having suffered from alcoholism for 20 years, Astor finally checked into a sanitarium for alcoholics in 1949.#mitchellleisen#claudettecolbert#donameche#johnbarrymore#maryastor#movietrivia#classicsuggestions
#johnbarrymore#midnight#trivia 🎬 -His sharp wit never left him, even when he was dying. A priest came to administer the last rites, accompanied by an exceedingly homely nurse. When the priest asked him if he had anything to confess, Barrymore replied, "Yes, Father. I am guilty, at this moment, of having carnal thoughts." "About whom?," replied the shocked priest. "About HER!," he replied, indicating the nurse. -The only one of the three Barrymore siblings (John, Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore) to never win or even be nominated for an Academy Award; he is now considered the finest actor of the three. -Father of John Drew Barrymore and Diana Barrymore. #donameche#trivia 🎩 -His father was an Italian immigrant. His mother had German, English, Irish, and Scottish ancestry. Americans pronounced his last name incorrectly in Italian ("Ah-mee-see"). So he changed it from "Amici" (correctly pronounced "Ah-mee-chee") into "Ameche", in order to keep the original Italian pronunciation. -Calling the telephone the "Don Ameche" became popular American Slang in the 1930s and '40s due to his role as Alexander Graham Bell. -Abandoned a career as a lawyer to take up acting. #mitchellleisen#claudettecolbert#donameche#johnbarrymore#maryastor#movietrivia#classicsuggestions
#midnight#trivia 🍾 -On Thursday, September 28, 1939, Robert L. Buckner filed a plagiarism suit demanding an injunction against exhibition of the film, "Midnight," and an accounting and damages, in the U.S. Federal Court, against Paramount Pictures, Inc. and Charles Beahan. Plaintiff (Buckner)claims that in 1933 he and Beahan wrote a play entitled, "Dearly Beloved," and delivered a manuscript to Paramount. The complaint charges Paramount with infringing the play in the picture, "Midnight," and states that Beahan is named a defendant because he refuses to join the suit as a plaintiff. #mitchellleisen#claudettecolbert#donameche#johnbarrymore#maryastor#movietrivia#classicsuggestions
#midnight#trivia 🌌 -Mary Astor's pregnancy caused some filming problems. -When Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett turned in their script, the studio liked it, but felt it needed some work. The writers they hired to rewrite the script were: Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett. The studio sent them their own script to rewrite without knowing it. Wilder and Brackett simply retyped their original script and the studio loved the "rewrites" so much, they produced it with no further "changes". #mitchellleisen#claudettecolbert#donameche#johnbarrymore#maryastor#movietrivia#classicsuggestions
#midnight#trivia 💰 -When John Barrymore was cast, it was well known that his alcoholism would necessitate some accommodation. This accounted for the presence in the cast of his young wife, Elaine Barrie. When he could not remember some of his lines, they were written out on blackboards just off camera, and both his irascibility and sense of humor were well in evidence. -At one point one of the female assistants on the set went into the ladies room, only to be confronted with the sight of Barrymore, his back turned, relieving himself. "You can't be here," she protested, "it's just for ladies." He turned around and retorted, "So's this!"#mitchellleisen#claudettecolbert#donameche#johnbarrymore#maryastor#movietrivia#classicsuggestions

#ItHappenedOneNight - I can hardly say anything but sigh. What a wisecracking and loveable twosome #ClarkGable and #ClaudetteColbert make! Released in 1934, the making of this Pre-Code (made before the #American film rating body MPAA was formed) film has all the elements to be made into a movie of its own -- the lead pair didn't get along on set; they hated the #script which had been rejected by many known names, but had been forced into working in it; and that this is one of those rare #Hollywood movies to have won the "#BigFive " #AcademyAwards (#Picture , #Actor , #Actress , #Director , #Writing ). It is also a rare romantic comedy to have won the #Oscar .
Rumour has it that the sales of men's undershirts dipped nationwide because of a topless Clark Gable in one scene. #FrankCapra has a way with #screwball#comedies . This one remains one of his most popular movies. Watch it to know why.
