Review : Steeple Coffee House at Grace Community Church
Espresso and Drip : Flight 2 ways of Ruby’s Kenya Kiangoi
Drip Number 2 : Copa Vida’s Halo Beriti
Walking through the campus I am immediately brought back to my youth when I was desperately in search of a higher purpose. (Good and bad memories) The corporate religious culture is palpable in the air; parking lot full to the brim, sermons being given over loud speaker in the halls, sandstone brick façade, and the queasy feeling of repression.
That’s only worth mentioning, because the cafe is entirely integrated, and though it is open to the public, the sound system plays the likes of Matt Redman and Chris Tomlin, and patrons and purveyors talk shop (god). It does however have a specific third wave vibe which helps make this spot very habitable. With RUBY and COPA VIDA on bar and for retail alongside kettles and ‘cool’ hats, the copy of Fresh Cup featuring CAT AND CLOUD, and ample seating from a variety of comfort levels.
The barmen are nice and the equipment is clean and legit (2 group Linea/Mazzer Major, Curtis batch, Hario V60). I asked ‘What’s good to drink and didn’t get an enthusiastic answer, so we came to terms on the S/O Flight Two Ways.
The espresso is dry and light bodied: bland and papery upfront, moving into some dehydrated fruits and finishing with a little anise and spice. Not a bad pull, but it’s not quite my style.
On to the drip: the cup is about 200g, due to the fact that I got a flight and the total price is only $5. Upfront, the body is prominent and and the sweet raisin quality comes through. There isn’t much of an evolution, but the finish is pleasant with a slight astringency. My second, the Ethiopian from Copa hits quick with light sweetness that turns right away to a nice bitterness. It too is dry and I was hoping for juicy and tart, but it is a solid cup nonetheless.
All in all, the church goers and seminary students are lucky to have this place, but unless you live in the valley and are desperate for good coffee (like myself) there’s no particular reason to come here. That said, I’ll be here on all of my days off.
Matcha lovers rejoice. Our signature special The Gorge is flying off the shelf and will remain a permanent drink on our menu. With matcha from @teachaite and organic lavender from our local partners @holykakow and a touch of cinnamon, you know it’s already got Portland’s stamp approval. #thegorge#matchalatte
