Big sister was at first horrified by the idea of pinching the tops off her tenderly grown seedlings but soon got into the hang of it once I pointed out that bushier plants means more flowers which hopefully means more money to save up for her dream trip to Harry Potter world
Today we hiked in another cloud forest that was at a higher elevation than yesterday’s and is permanently in a cloud. It just blew me away! I have never taken so many photos in my life although my poor camera was really suffering by the end with the mist. I will post all 1,000 pics on Instagram during the following week. 😉
Studio corner. Although my finished art is abstract, I always start with observational drawing. I love to draw. I’m never happier than when I have a pencil or piece of charcoal in my hand. Simple pleasures are the best don’t you think? Today I’m drawing dead flowers: I love the way they explode into unexpected colour as they dry up. A last flush of life. There is so much raw beauty in end of life - pain too of course. My mum constantly worries about how she looks now she’s 2 years into palliative care, and spends a lot of time doing her makeup & what’s left of her hair. I tell her she looks like a baby sparrow that’s dropped out of its nest: fragile, seeking, but totally adorable💛
Today’s track on loop in the studio is ‘Take a Little Walk’ by Gregory Hoskins (@vainandalone) So, so good. If you read this Gregory, your music gives me comfort, thank you.

Another picture from our incredible hike in the cloud forest today in Selvatura. We crossed hanging bridges (see my mystories) which had my heart in my mouth and saw moss dripping from trees. Truly inspiring 💚🙌🏼
Having recently been researching Monet’s Iris series for my own personal work, I was delighted to discover this piece in The Albertina, Vienna, by Max Pechstein.”Irises in the Evening Shadow’ (1925), although painted in the Secessionist style, pays homage to Impressionism and I was interested to learn that Pechstein later painted at Monet’s garden in Giverny during WW1. #maxpechstein#secessionism#impressionism#botanicalinspiration#irisflower#botanicaltextiles
Whether you call them Narcissus, Daffodils, or Jonquils, these cheerful flowers are among the earliest blooms to poke through the frozen soil in early spring. Heralding the warming to come, these flowers remind us that no winter freeze can last forever. Bring a little more life and beauty into your world by embracing all that the Narcissus symbolizes for cultures around the world.
What Does the Narcissus Flower Mean?
Since both Narcissus and Daffodils are technically the same flower, their meanings overlap as well. These flowers are usually considered a symbol of:
Prosperity and wealth, especially in the future
March birthdays, as the birth flower of the month
The arrival of spring
Rebirth and renewal
Good luck and happiness
Narcissism and egotism
The austerity and challenges of Lent
Clarity and inspiration
The Chinese New Year
Not all of the Narcissus meanings are strictly positive. You can tell a friend you’re hoping for their success with a potted plant, or you can warn them about an ego that’s growing out of control. .
What do you think of when you see the first daffodils blooming after a long winter ?
#day10#yourderbyshireopenarts @derbyshireopenarts 'MY CREATIVE PROCESS ' Here are several pics to show you my creative process for one of the jewellery ranges I make which is hand dyed and printed anodised aluminium. This is a process I have done for 25 years and taught the technique for 20 years, some local jewellers that came to my early classes learnt this technique as well as many silversmithing techniques. Pic 1 shows my inspiration which has always been the nature I see around me and the simplified designs I create from this to inspire my work. Pic 2 shows how I print and paint onto aluminium before its sealed. Pic 3 shows some of the hand tool processes at my bench, such as sawing, filing the edges at an angle to give a silver border and burnishing it to create a high shine, then doming to create form and 3d shape. Pic 4 shows my final finished pieces after they have been drilled and ear wires made from silver and hung on silver chains ready to wear! I love the process of making and seeing each bit develop as I go along....sometimes many happy accidents are created along the way which adds to the fun! #mycreativestory#handmade#madeinnewmills#doartsspringbanknewmills18#mycreativeprocess#botanicalinspiration#highpeak#yourworkinprogress#printedaluminium#creativejourney
