Student - there’s nothing to read.
Me - umm we are standing in the library.
Student - yeah, I know.
Me - sooo, there’s plenty to read.
Student - nahhhh, I’ve read this stuff.
Me - (pulls random book off shelf where I’m standing) have you read this?
Student - erm no!
Me - hey! How good am I! There you go, I found you a book!
Student - yeah, nah, umm. . . . .
Me - (super innocent voice) but what? I found you a book you haven’t read - I mean - wow! What are the odds huh!
Student - *sigh* yeah thanks Frances. (Takes book as I check it out for them, shoulders drooped, defeated, dejected.)
My triumph was short lived. As I left the library, my heart sank. For me, reading is bliss. Why is that not the case for this student and I’m sure lots of people? It’s now my mission to find books that the students want to read. Books they want to pass onto their friends. Books they want to read again.
I’m working my way through these library books so that next term I can say I’ve read these books and can hopefully recommend them to students to read for joy.
Since this exchange, I did find a series of books to recommend to this student and they devoured the first three books and come and told me about it. Oh the joy!
What are some of your fave reads you would pass on to a friend?
For me, anything Morris Gleitzman. No matter how old you are Morris writes for everyone. #learningassistant#library#borrowabook#teachersaide#morrisgleitzman
If you love video games and 80’s pop culture, this is your book. For me, I’m not of fan of either. Luckily, the idea of such a contest was fun and the underlying message of this story were well done. Shoutout to @alexdaneke for letting me borrow the audiobook!
If your home library is running out of shelves or you are getting tired of lugging around books on your apartment moves, time to part with them.
Books in great condition or recently published can still fetch a pretty price so sell them. Chances are you probably won’t re-read or reference them in the future.⠀
Old vintage books can also carry a pretty penny. See what's on your shelves that someone may find valuable.⠀⠀
Leave some where you find @littlefreelibrary. There's a few locations by the shore in Avon, Asbury Park, etc. Drop off some light reading for someone at the beach.⠀⠀
Otherwise, donate them to local libraries, shelters, Freecycle and even doctors offices. Patients may want a good book to read while undergoing treatment. Cycle them back in and let others find joy in your books.
Check out www.newlegacybooks.com for drop off locations in NJ.⠀⠀
If they have reached the end of life, drop them off for paper recycling. You may need to remove the pages from any hard covers.

As promised, here are the books I had in return for the book swap. This book swap is such where you don't get your books back! This is something I cannot fathom, why would you like to give away good books? Would you like to give away your books to never have them back?
I buy books and never give them away - not because I am a hoarder but because they all are special to me. I personally find it hard to buy a book that I won't keep on my shelves. I gave away, which I later discovered because I already had a copy of The Catcher In The Rye. I took the book thinking that I will have it back but if the borrower didn't take good care of it I wouldn't be disappointed because I already have a copy of the book.
I will in another post be talking about the book and how I felt about it. Maybe a blog post too. 😍 4321 by Paul Auster - I was taken aback by the girl who wanted to give away this book. 😍 Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris - There were no takers for this book, so I did the honours of having it. I have heard only good things about it. 😍 Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer - It had an interesting back cover and I have seen it quite a lot on bookstagram so I decided to give it a try.
