Evening all! Here’s the rest of that miniature I promised you - complete with hell mouth and bellow-blowing devils! As yesterday, this is @uofglasgowasc MS Hunter 398 (V.2.18), f.7r, which is one of 48 beautiful illuminated miniatures across the first 24 folios from this C15th French Apocalypse manuscript. The image relates to Revelations 6: 7-8: “And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature, saying: Come, and see. / And behold a pale horse, and he that sat upon him, his name was Death, and hell followed him. And power was given to him over the four parts of the earth, to kill with sword, with famine, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.” John (our author/narrator) is pictured on the left, and the scroll which is shown under his symbol of the eagle, flying above the hell mouth, echoes the verse being depicted, reading “Vien et regarde”: ‘Come and see’. Those suffering their fate in the hell mouth represent folk across society - see if you can spot the king in his crown and the mitred bishop! I could spend the next two months posting images from this MS if you’d let me! They’re all staggeringly beautiful. And you can’t beat a good hell mouth, after all...! #apocalypse #revelations #death #medievalapocalypse #judgementday #hellmouth #mouthofhell #uofglasgow #uofglibrary #iglibraries #specialcollections #specialcollectionsofinstagram #archives #archivesofinstagram #libraries #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #manuscriptsofinstagram #rarebooksofinstagram #manuscripts #books #bookhistory #bookart #medieval #medievalmanuscripts #rarebooks #explorearchives #archivesunlocked

#FinebindingFriday coincides quite nicely with my trip to the National Museum of Scotland's Library, as part of the Rare Books in Scotland meeting. We were shown this beautifully bound Foulis press 1770 edition of John Milton's Paradise Lost, and told its rather sad back story. It was bound as an example of the binding skills of James Scott, bookbinder in Edinbugh in 1781, who inscribed the inside with the following: "To the President, Vice President and members; of the Antiquary Society of Scotland; this book, a specimen, of the Bookbinding & Printing in Scotland, at this period..." Scott was hoping to gain the business of the society with his gift; unfortunately the society's finances were in a rather dire state and he was only commissioned to make a rather basic receipt book. His own business floundered and disappeared by 1790. I really enjoyed the opportunity to mingle with Scotland's rare book librarians, and to meet fellow instagrammar @rcpeheritage #Finebinding #bookbinding #paradiselost #scotland #ig_libraries #nationalmuseum #librariesofinstagram #archivesofinstagram #bookstagram #booklover #bookporn #marbled #marbledpaper #rarebooksscotland #bibliophile #biblioteca #scottishlibrary #antiquarian #instabook #instascotland #edinburgh #visitscotland #bookhistory #library #literature

For #foetalfriday we have an article from Dr. Max Jordan ‘Pathologisch anatomische Beitrage zur congenita’ in from Beitrage zur Elephantiasis pathologischen Anatomie und zur allgemeinen Pathologie, Band VIII in 1890.
*
Lymphatic filariasis, also known as elephantiasis, is a human disease caused by parasitic worms known as filarial worms. Most cases of the disease have no symptoms. Some people, however, develop a syndrome called elephantiasis, which is marked by severe swelling in the arms, legs, breasts, or genitals.

Part of the Ballantyne Collection.

Hello everyone! I don’t know about you, but despite the amazing weather I feel like death warmed up today: currently suffering (loudly, I hasten to add) from post-conference jet lag plus a cold I caught on the flight home. Woe! 🤧 Still, that gives me an excellent excuse to share this glorious fella from @uofglasgowasc MS Hunter 398 (V.2.18), a C15th French Apocalypse manuscript, along with their rather fed up looking horse! 💀 I promise I’ll share the rest of this miniature (which is an absolute belter!) tomorrow! #apocalypse #death #medievalapocalypse #medievaldeath #uofglasgow #uofglibrary #iglibraries #specialcollections #specialcollectionsofinstagram #archives #archivesofinstagram #libraries #librariesofinstagram #bookstagram #manuscriptsofinstagram #rarebooksofinstagram #manuscripts #books #bookhistory #bookart #medieval #medievalmanuscripts #rarebooks #explorearchives #archivesunlocked

This book was an impulsive pull from the shelf when I was meant to be looking at some books that were, em, a little more boring. I can forgive myself for this transgression as it has inadvertently shed some light on the dating of the shelf labels on the spine to after 1846 but before 1869. It's also another Hawthornden Book, and rather more ambiguous as to which William Drummond owned it (the Father or the son?) #brechincollection #dundeeuni #dundee #hawthornden #bibliophile #rarebooks #librariesofinstagram #archivesofinstagram #archivesunlocked #episcopalian #anglican #churchhistory #vintage #instabooks #bookstagram #booklover #bookporn #antiquarian #brechin #laurencekirk #instabooks #bookstagram #biblioteca #ig_lib #plato #history #bookhistory #bookporn

Celebrated as Biographers’ Day, May 16 marks the anniversary of the first meeting between Samuel Johnson (1709-1784), the author of the landmark 'Dictionary of the English Language', and his biographer James Boswell (1740-1795). The two men met in Davies’ London bookshop in 1763, and established a relationship that would allow Boswell to produce what is recognised as the greatest biography ever written: 'The Life of Samuel Johnson', published in 1791.

If you love book history, Bird & Bull Press is one of the most important publishing programs to know about. When Henry Morris started B&B, one of America's oldest private presses in 1958, he was just looking for an outlet for his interest in hand papermaking. Over the course of his lifetime, B&B became one of the only presses to publish books on what Morris called "esoteric subjects" in book history and paper making, all printed by letterpress from metal type on Henry's own handmade (or imported mould-made) paper.

I just adore the seventeenth-century hand of William Drummond, son of the poet William Drummond of Hawthornden. I'm currently listing the books in the Brechin Collection belonging to their descendant by marriage, Bishop Abernethy Drummond. The next step is going through them physically to look for Hawthorden provenance like this, and reconstruct part of the family library. Hi everyone, @bibliovita here from Rare Books 🤓 Although we don't make a habit of judging books by their covers, we do love a good binding, especially a gold tooled beauty such as this one! The history of the book is a global one, to which many cultures have contributed over the centuries. Gold tooled book bindings originated in Islamic cultures of the southern Mediterranean and Middle East in the medieval period. The technique seems to have entered the style manual of European binders via Italy and Spain (which had more contact with Islamic regions than other parts of Europe), and by the mid-16th century was the most popular form of decoration on book bindings across Europe. This English example (RAREEMM 711/37) dates to around 1712, when the Christian spiritual text inside it was published. 🌟🌟🌟

“My Last Will and Testament. To the Bed of the River Thames, the river on whose banks I have printed all my printed books, I bequeath The Doves Press Fount of Type — the punches, the matrices, and the type in use at the time of my death, and may the river in its tides and flow pass over them to and from the great sea for ever and for ever, or until its tides and flow forever cease; then may they share the fate of all the world, and pass from change to change forever upon the Tides of Time, untouched of other use and all else.” I’ve been reading the journals of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson, hoping for a first-hand account of the drama surrounding the Doves Press Type. He rarely mentions his work; his journals are mostly deep philosophical musings, with occasional comments about his wife, Annie, having their first child, or mentioning his decision to close the Doves Bindery. But, his journals are a first-hand account of what it was like to be the husband of a suffragette who was jailed during her fight for women’s rights (for the record, TJCS also believed women should have the vote), so that’s pretty awesome.
Cobden-Sanderson, bookbinder and printer, was a friend of William Morris and was one of the artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The Doves Press ran from 1900-1916. TJCS had a falling-out with his business partner, Emery Walker, in 1909, with whom he had designed a gorgeous typeface, based on the roman type of 15th-century printer Nicolas Jenson. But, TJCS was determined that no one else (especially Walker) should have this type so, he snuck the type, matrices, and punches to the Thames in the dead of night, and threw it all into the river (not all in one night, of course). In 2014, the Port of London Authority’s diving team, directed by Robert Green, discovered 151 metal sorts in the Thames. [PR4832.C657]

This has been an excellent month for meeting Penguin book collectors from London.
*
I posted in April about how the advertisement for the Prisoners of War Book Service in the 1944 Pelican “Geology in the Service of Man” had piqued my interest in learning more about wartime Penguin books.
*
Caroline of @penguincollsoc recommended that I try to obtain a copy of their publication, Penguins March On, by Joe Pearson (on Instagram as @designfortoday), which covers a variety of topics related to wartime Penguin publishing.
*
I duly placed my order for Penguins March On and was contacted by Jim Robinson, the person in charge of publications, who had plans to be in the area and offered to hand-deliver it.
*
Since I joined the Penguin Collector Society over a year ago, I have placed several orders for their excellent books, and have had some interesting email exchanges with Jim, who, though he now lives in London, is originally from my small town and still has family here.
*
We arranged to meet last week (appropriately at a library coffee shop) and spent an hour chatting about Penguins, our families, and lots of local things. It was wonderful to talk with him in person and to learn more about the Society. I continue to be amazed at the kindness and generosity of Penguin book collectors, and the personal relationships that I have made.
*
I am ready to start reading Penguins March On, which is shown here with the two wartime Egyptian Penguins that I own, Men of America and An A.B.C. of the Pacific, both printed in Egypt for soldiers in the early 1940s. Many thanks to my husband for picking up the A.B.C. book at @skoobbookslondon on his trip in February.
*
Swipe through to see the table of contents from Penguins March On and some pages and ads from the Egyptian Penguins.

The library of the Dutch House of Representatives, or Handelingenkamer, is arguably one of the most playful libraries in the world. Four floors, lots of folio books and a spiral staircase - that's just perfect for a daily workout! I have enjoyed myself there the last couple of months, and did some research on the collection in between my training hours. Results will be presented in the coming weeks!

Four saints, two of them bishops, in an illuminated initial 'O' cut from an Italian choir book made c. 1440-1450. This cutting – around 12 x 15 cm – is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York. It is one of a number of historiated initials painted by the same hand (and presumably from the same manuscript) once owned by William Young Ottley. His collection was sold at Sotheby's in 1838, and is now dispersed among public and private collections in Europe and the USA. Art historians have since pieced together an individual artistic identity from these fragments, who is now known as the 'Master of the Murano Gradual' after a choir book they are thought to have illuminated for St Michael's monastery on Murano in the Venetian Lagoon. This artist's style harmoniously fuses established elements of Venetian and Lombard traditions, and is sometimes confused with that of Belbello da Pavia (d. 1473), with whom the Master of the Murano Gradual may have worked.⠀
