Yesterday #BLMWild advocates pitched in to help clean up Long Canyon, BLM-managed public lands on the doorstep of Joshua Tree National Park and Sand to Snow National Monument in the California Desert. These lands are significant for many species of wildlife, including the Mojave Fringe-Toed Lizard which has important habitat nearby.

Join us this Saturday, April 21st (John Muir’s birthday) to explore the Forks of Butte Creek Outstanding Natural Area in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Chico, CA. This is a moderate hike 3-4 miles roundtrip on the Indian Springs Trail with a 400-500 foot elevation loss and gain. Depending on the state of the trail in the creek inner gorge, we may or may not reach the creek, but there will be scenic views of the canyon. Hikers should be aware of possible poison oak and ticks. Butte Creek has carved a dramatic canyon through volcanic and serpentine rock formations in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Clothed in conifers, oaks, and chaparral, the canyon also puts on a fine spring wildflower display and his home to the rare Butte County fritillary.
The public lands in this area are administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC), which is managed for its scenic, recreational, and natural resource values. The BLM also found 19 miles of the creek to be eligible for National Wild & Scenic River protection due to its outstanding scenic, recreation, geology, and historical values. The BLM will determine the future of this area in its upcoming Northern California Integrated Plan. Participants will meet in Chico at 9AM to carpool to the trailhead (or at the DeSabla Lake Fishing Access on the Skyway at 10AM). Hike Leader: Alan Mendoza (Yahi Group), co-leader: Steve Evans (CalWild). http://bit.ly/buttecreek

10/10 weekend ☀️
"I don't know you, but I know you well. You came to me, upon the wings of the universe, riding high and in high style. I glimpsed you these days, gazing at me through the windows of my mind, and I caught hold, as you transported me to wild and wonderful places. The world became our magic, and we played in it's mischieviousness. As we travel the roads less taken, or perhaps never taken before, our joy becomes unbounded through all time and space. All of us, each of us, weave our own patterns in the fabric of existence. To find that thread that leads to friendship and bottles of joy, is a gift of words and a gift beyond words. Sometimes, it's something only the heart can feel. And sometimes it was in your words all along."

Mt. Shasta surrounded by Mother Earth's pallette in N. California. This magnificent sacred being dominates the entire landscape here at over 14,000 ft. "Every morning, the world is created
Under the orange sticks of the sun.
The heaped ashes of the night
Turn into leaves again.
And fasten themselves to the
High branches
and the ponds appear
Like black cloth
On which are painted islands
Of summer lilies
If it is your nature
To be happy
You will swim along the soft trails
For hours, your imagination
Alighting everywhere
And if your spirit
Carries within it, the thorn
That is heavier than lead
If its all you can do
To keep on trudging
There is still somewhere deep within you
A beast shouting that the earth
Is exactly what it wanted
Each pond with its blazing lilies
As a prayer heard and answered
Lavishly, every morning
Whether or not
You have ever dared to be happy
Whether or not
You have ever dared to pray"

I"I thought the earth remembered me, she took me back so tenderly, arranging her dark skirts, her pockets full of lichens and seeds. I slept as never before, a stone on the river bed, nothing between me and the white fire of the stars but my thoughts, and they floated light as moths among the branches of the perfect trees. All night I heard the small kingdoms, breathing around me, the insects and the birds who do their work in the darkness. All night I rose and fell, as if in water grappling with a luminous doom. By morning I had vanished at least a dozen times into something better." Mary Oliver

Spring is here and JBR is in perfect shape! Get after it!
Shasta River with high spring water flows. This river still has salmon that come back to spawn all the way from the Pacific Ocean, at least 180 miles. It's mind boggling to realize the salmon migrations and the distance these prehistoric fish swim back to their birth place.

Repost @monumentsforusa:
Last December, President @realdonaldtrump issued proclamations to eliminate 2 million acres of public land protections. Now, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is moving forward with creating land use plans using diminished boundaries for Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments and is seeking public comments. Comments are due for Bears Ears on April 11 and for Grand Staircase-Escalante on April 13. It is important for you to share your personal experiences and why you want these national treasures protected for future generations. The jagged peaks of the Terry Badlands, can be seen for miles. This photo was during Friday's sunset 4/06. The Terry Badlands are also the largest and only wilderness study area in eastern Montana with 44,910 acres of recreational opportunities. (33,024 acres of which have been found suitable for Wilderness protection). Currently their is a bill out to release the badlands and several other protected WSA's within Montana. Currently its hard to say exactly what would happen to all of these areas once those protections are lifted. As it would be up to each agency and what the study results were from 30-40 years ago were. Some may become wilderness others maybe opened to industry and recreational loss. I have spoken with a local BLM officer, read paper articles and have read the HR bill text as well, including information from @wildmt .
I personally would like to see the Terry Badlands become at least wilderness if not more. The Terry area has an interesting history from Lewis and Clark, Sitting Bull, 7th Calvary, Bootlegging, Evelyn Cameron, Milwuakee RR and probably so much more. That I hope to uncover later this year.

Each mountain range is a unique ecosystem all to it's own. On my first visit to the Rocky Mountains, I was blown away by the sheer rock walls towering thousands of feet almost straight up. It didn't take long to get altitude sickness driving up the mountains and we turned back around to find a campground at a lower elevation to avoid being sick. The mountains in N. California tend to
have everything. Sheer walls in places, sloped mountain sides full of beautiful forests and craggy peaks. Everywhere you turn is a diffrent view and todays post of the Siskiyou Mountains is no exception. These mountains start as a Coastal Range from the mouth of the Klamath River at the Pacific Ocean along with the mighty Redwood Forests. They follow the Klamath River to N. Central Siskiyou County and then make a u turn north into Oregon.

Shasta River Canyon in N. California. This beautiful and desolate canyon was the main stagecoach route from mining camps along the Klamath River to Yreka, California in the Shasta Valley. The old road is still used by the few people that own land and mining claims on the Shasta River, a major hold bearing river.

#onlyinnortherncalifornia  #norcalhiking  , #blmwild  #mypubliclands  , #usinterior  #bureauoflandmanagement  #keepitpublic  #seekmorewilderness  #seesiskiyou  , #discoversiskiyou  #roamtheplanet  #ourplanetdaily

The Mothership has arrived on Mt. Shasta. Enormous lenticular cloud covered Mt. Shasta recently and it was totally wild and beautiful. This great mountain never ceases to amaze anyone living in Siskiyou County of N. California.

Sometimes great Mother Earth gives you gifts that speak to your heart. When winter finally hit here in March the land was still parched and thirsty. Not anymore
Grateful to know our rivers will be full and wild even in the hot summer.

The responsibility of raising a son has never pulled so heavily on me.  The weight of knowing that I am solely responsible for shaping this small human into the person that he will become for the rest of his life.  The knowledge of all of the things that I want to teach him, hard fought battles I want to save him, valuable lessons that came at a price that I want to keep him from having to pay because, when it comes right down to it, I think I paid enough for both of us.

But, the question on my mind more than any other is how do I teach him these things?  How do I give to him the strength that I gained from fighting through an unstable, fearful childhood?  A childhood without the things that it is easy to feel all children are entitled to, such as food, reliable shelter, running water at home, the security of living in the same house for more than a few months at a time, a parent there to see them on the bus in the morning and to be there after school, and perhaps most sadly, what oftentimes felt like without love.
While I certainly would have changed it at the time if given the chance, my early years shaped me and defined my future in a way that I am now grateful for.  Those years taught me independence, resiliency, and adaptability; they gave me grit and strength and the knowledge to know that no single situation defines who I am and what I can do. Those years ingrained in me that when things get tough, the only way out is through; through fear, beyond pain, past loneliness, and right on by failure.  And that on the other side of all of those things are success, passion, happiness, fulfillment, self-validation, and love.
As a parent to a 13 year old son that is quickly being molded into the man he will one day be, the best answer I have came up with for how to teach my son the things that my hard fought childhood brought to me is through the wilderness. Backpacking trips that teach him to place value on the essential things in life and leave the rest behind or else he’s going to carry the weight of them on his back up the mountain.  Slot canyon trips that... Klamath River stagecoach road. Many of the trees along here were planted by the Chinese gold workers who immigrated to this area. They brought with them the locust tree which was used for making fence posts. Many places along the Klamath you will still find these fence posts on old homesteads that are still standing strong with no rot on them after 150 years.

Old roads and abandoned barns dot the country out of Hilt, California. Hilt is at the very northern end of Siskiyou County and was a very important stagecoach stop in the 1800s. Fruitgrowers still own much of the land and have been good stewards of the Siskiyou Mountain forest groves. The town became famous for building wooden fruit boxes for the citrus industry and if your lucky enough to find an old wooden fruit box it more than likely came from here. The foothills, valleys and rugged mountains are really beautiful in this locale and a few miles north you hit Oregon. Much of the mountainous area is part of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

Mt. Shasta rises above the Siskiyou Mountains in N. California. The knob on the top of the peak on the right is Paradise Craggy and has an old fire tower resting there. The knob is the core of an old volcanic cinder cone, and it is not unusual to see these in the mountains of Siskiyou County.

Long shadows and wierd views traveling down the old stagecoach road along the Klamath River in N. California. We are heading north and just south of here the river begins it's mad tumble through the steep canyons. National Geographic called the Klamath the backward river cause most mountain rivers start in the high canyons and then meet the valleys. The Klamath starts in Oregon in several large lakes and makes it way through the steep Siskiyou and Klamath Mountains, and several other ranges including the Marble Mountain Wilderness much later on it's 243 mile journey to the Pacific Ocean.

Klamath River from the old stagecoach road in Siskiyou County. The river was much higher today meaning water had been let from the dams to help spring Salmon spawning season. These salmon start their lives in rivers and creeks and eventually make their way into the ocean. Some years later they make the long arduous trip back to their birthplace to lay their eggs and spawn.

I drove to the dam again today and snapped these wildflowers out the window while waiting at the vehicle security check. After already taking @applecidertigerbalm, @annenharrington & @becbecrebecki there within the last few months I still can’t get enough of going. There are so many memories, when @kmbomillah and I were little and mom worked at the old gift shop (which isn’t there anymore, it was a modular in the first parking lot on the Arizona side), we’d sit on the wall and throw popcorn to the carp down below, when the water level was much higher. Or in high school when @mathews.laura_anne and I would have picnics in the alcoves and tourists gave us crazy looks. Down below in the Colorado River is where my grandmothers ashes were scattered and I always think of her when I look out off the edge. I barely knew her but there’s a picture of her with my dad, kim and I at the old marina when we were super little and going to the places she loved is one way to get to know her even decades later. Going there never gets old, it’s definitely one of my favorite pieces of America.
