A perfect day canoeing along the maze-like waterways of the polders with Harriet's soaring overhead, grebes and mallards swimming in our wake, found us eye level with birds on fertile, grassy flats. Here, Eurasian Oystercatchers have forsaken their seafood diet and life along coast. No longer do they seek to catch oysters and crack open their shells with their strong beaks. Instead they plunge their dagger-like bills into the soft, muddy soil and pull out big, juicy worms. They also nest here in the farm land and their strident whistling call adds to cacophony of geese and gruttos creating a unique soundtrack to our paddling journey, and one that is best enjoyed on the peaceful water.
