Bird names are sometimes bizarre and make next to no sense. This one?? 👉 “Orange bellied flowerpecker”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Orange belly? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✅ Pecks at flowers? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
...someone got it right this time! 🧡🌼
Usually heard more often than seen, the Fan-Tailed Cuckoo is a gorgeous bird. Cuckoos get a bad rap as they parasitise other birds nest. They will lay an egg of their own in the other birds nest (preferably a Fairy-Wren or Thornbill for this species) and leave it to be raised by its now foster parents. Pretty sneaky, but a pretty cool adaptation in my eyes. - Cacomantis flabelliformis #fantailedcuckoo

By far the most common bird in Alice Springs were these wonderful little Zebra Finches. Anywhere there was a reliable water source we found dozens of these beauties. The tricky thing about photographing them is they are so quick & would come down for a drink in waves! So we donned our camo throws & got pretty close at this location so we could try for some separation. Which also had the added bonus of really showing their amazing plumage detail!
