COFFEE!?....DID YOU KNOW NEXT FACTS ABOUT IT!?...
☕️ Beethoven was such an ardent coffee lover that he’d count 60 beans per cup before making his brew.
☕️ Did you know that coffee doesn’t just give us humans a buzz? No siree. BEES get a buzz when drinking coffee and what’s even more interesting is that it supercharges their long-term memory! How else do you think they find their way back to the same plant over and over again?
☕️ Exfoliate your skin with moist coffee grounds at least twice a week, rinse and watch your face glow. .
☕️ French novelist and playwright Honore de Balzac supposedly consumed 50 cups of coffee a day to fuel his inspiration while writing. It’s scary to think that the lethal dose is about 100 cups of coffee.
☕️ During WWII American soldiers would order their espresso watered down because it was too strong for them.
☕️ In 1906, a Belgian man living in Guatemala by the name George Washington invented instant coffee. Not the first American president, but the first inventor of instant coffee. .
☕️ The word coffee originates from the Arabic word ‘qahhwat al-bun’ which was then shortened to ‘qahwa’. The Turkish called it ‘kahve’ after which the Dutch made it ‘koffie’, until it was finally translated to ‘coffee’ in English.

But, the Tagliatelli al Limone might have upstaged them. Their lemony/seafood umami (bottarga) kick and delicate texture made for a heavenly experience. Carbonara and Pesto had an appropriately toothier bite: the former with a truly multifaceted cheese blend pairing flawlessly with the yolks while the latter had an assertively refreshing basil forward taste and subtle nutty notes (almonds/pistachios). 👏
Having consumed enough carbs to walk back to Philly if necessary, it was time for some (all the) protein. A large whole baked fish landed glistening under a bright vinaigratte. Adorned by various grilled vegetables, it might have been the best fish I’ve had this year: supremely flavorful, moist, and ethereally delicate in texture. Some of this textural magic carries over to a rabbit pizzaiola dish with a composition somewhere between fall-apart type fish and more fibrous chicken; wine and well-developed San Marzano flavors are prominent in the sauce which thoroughly permeates the meat. Fisherman Stew was a powerhouse tour of technique: impossibly tender (usually chewy) calamari and scallops, more of those succulent prawns, sea forward clams, and an absolutely divine piece of swordfish. Pearls of couscous provided a more unifying mouthfeel that brought together these various proteins harmoniously with a soothing cinnamon/saffron broth.
No meal is complete without dessert however…so 3 were ordered. Look, the Zeppoli are definitely a must try: warm airy sugar dusted fried clouds with a restrained amount of Nutella, and somehow the cannoli are stronger still. Once you taste these toasty crunch-some housemade shells filled to the brim with a rich ricotta chocolate chip mixture, it will be hard to enjoy others. Best for last however: a pistachio walnut honey semifreddo delivering a (context) Snickers like Nougat experience heightened by luscious creamy moments briefly paused by precisely measured nut crunch and natural honey sweetness.
Most of you will not embrace my level of gluttony, so here it is (favorites): Sausage (app), Tagliatelli + Gnocchi (half portions), Whole Fish Special (Swordfish if unavail), close with the Semifreddo.
Dinner at @zeppolirestaurant 🔥💣🔥👌🙌💥🙌👍🔥🔥💣
Finocchi Salsiccia / Gamberetti e Fagioli / Tripe / Anchovies / Gnocchi alla’ Argentiera / Tagliatelli al Limone / Pesto Trapanese / Sicilian Fisherman Stew / Coniglio Pizzaiola / Whole Fish Special (Orata) / Zeppoli Siciliano / Cannoli Classico / Pistachio Semifreddo Special
This is going to be a long review for obvious reasons (70% + of menu ordered), so for the tl:dr crowd...Very Strongly Recommended; wholly stellar. In terms of food, dishes are exciting and refined without feeling forced or remote; while on the human side, Chef Joey along with his staff create an experience that feels intimate but relaxed with a very charming friendly demeanor.
Now, on to the deets. That bread service 🔥. Daily housemade rosemary focaccia and tomato pizza/pie pieces delight with a pillowy crumb, salty punch, and crisp crust. Not only individually great, they became trusty sauce mopping up tools all night (4 bread refills testify to my approval). And then the apps started flowing, meaty brined anchovies with a bright oil lemon drizzle, wonderfully complex housemade sausages that excelled texturally in the snap of their casing/charred exterior crust and two level flavor delivery (fennel as aftertaste), extra large prawns with a strongly grilled umami rich profile, capped with a (first time) delicious red sauce tripe dish with contrasting mouthfeel of the velvety eggplant and more rustic chewier tripe.
As we progressed on to the pastas, it just kept getting better. Gnocchi were described as “similar to a ravioli filling” which is just the kind of subversive creativity I love. These are tremendous for the same reason eating cookie dough is, they turn a classic concept upside down with sheer gluttony: balls of pure ricotta (light spinach) drizzled with brown butter? Yup, let’s call it a gnocchi and have a blast. (...continued next post...)
