Interesting to note: penises can be seen all over the city of Pompeii. They have a couple of different meanings...Depending on the corner you are at, the direction a penis is pointing will direct you to the nearest brothel. The penis was also a sign of prosperity and fertility, so it was not uncommon to find a penis displayed in front of a shop. The paintings displayed above the entrances of the brothel showed the sex positions that the women were offering. Prices were craved in stone on some street corners for independent workers, most times not costing more than 2 asses (a single glass of wine). p.s. they’re is a dispute if there was 26 or 42 brothels in Pompeii (a city of then 20,000). Pompeii is currently only 70% excavated
Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. At the time the people of Pompeii believed it was the end of the world (they didn’t know what a volcano was). Most people thought to stay in their homes to avoid the “rocks falling from the sky”. Pompeii was eventually buried in 25 feet of ash during the 2 day eruption. Its ironic that most of the homes were built of volcanic stone and a day prior to the eruption the town was celebrating the festival of the “fire god”.
