Happy #FieldWorkFriday! Filtered forest light turns purple in the lense of a spotting scope. In the summer of 2016 this scope was used to count Hemlock Wooly Adelgid populations, an invasive insect that exclusively targets hemlock trees and can cause mortality in as little as 4 years (pictured in the second photo). The good news?! You don’t need a scope to see it- go check your hemlocks for small, white, wooly masses on the underside of branches and contact the Maine Forest Service if you’ve detected it. Accurate reporting and monitoring can help slow its spread! Bates Outing Club member Domi Frideger '21 of Durango, Colo., checks the Historic Quad from the entrance to the Peter J. Gomes Chapel. He was waiting to lead a group of newly accepted members of the Class of 2022 on a short hike to the top of Mount David on Friday, April 6.
.
A bit of architectural history: Though it was built in 1913, the Peter J. Gomes Chapel remains to this day one of the most architecturally interesting buildings on the Bates campus. Financed by Mrs. D. Willis James and dedicated on the eve of World War I, the Gomes Chapel’s design came from the Boston firm of Coolidge and Carlson, but the inspiration for its Gothic construction came from the King’s College Chapel at Cambridge University, which was built in the fifteenth century by Henry Vl. The structure is English Collegiate Gothic in style, and the seam-faced Quincy granite used in its construction gives the building its distinctive light coloring. Two aspects of the exterior are particularly interesting: the porch entrance based on the Galilee Porch of a cathedral in Durham, England, and the Tudor arches, which add to the basic Gothic style of the rest of the building.

Two aspects of the exterior are particularly interesting: the porch entrance based on the Galilee Porch of a cathedral in Durham, England, and the Tudor arches, which add to the basic Gothic style of the rest of the building. . It’s #NationalSiblingsDay, so let’s doff our Bobcat swim caps to a family tied with the most Bates siblings ever to compete in a single sport. That would be the Depew sibs (and Leonard sibs—see our update in the comments below). Not two, nor three, but all four siblings came to Bates — and all have been a big part of Bates swimming, including senior Jonathan.
.

From left, the Depews pose with their Bates Swim & Dive head coach, Peter Casares (middle): Caroline ’16, Jonathan ’18, Emily ’14, Nathaniel ’12. Along with parents Brenda and Mark Depew, the four attended last month’s NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, where Jonathan put an exclamation point on the Depew legacy at Bates with three All-America honors.
.

The siblings, says Casares, may have been similar in one way, “in their moral compass, their devotion to Bates, and their ability to work hard and to lead. But each brought something completely unique to the team in terms of what they did and how they did it — and how they did it really well.”

An installation of "Gifts" by senior thesis student David Breschi '18.
___

Every day between the hours of 12-1pm, Breschi invites one person from the community to take one of his works, which are on display at the Museum.
___

Breschi '18 hopes to give back to the Lewiston/Auburn community through his thesis installation, titled "Gifts". The idea for the community participation aspect of his thesis stemmed from his involvement in his community in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where his mother ran an arts center for ten years. "I worked very closely with her in giving back to the community through various art classes." #seniorthesis #batescollege #artmuseum #studentexhibition

A gray day from the top of Morse Mountain! Where has the spring sun gone? Also notice the distinct twigs of the birch tree that reach above the wheelbarrow. Birch twigs are particularly slender and terminate with what looks like a “Y”. These are catkins, a type of flower that bears inconspicuous or no petals. #neature #mainewoods #getoutside #batescollege

Very proud of this great group of my oud and Indian tabla students as they present their final performances today at Bates College. I’ll be losing a few of these brilliant student musicians as they graduate this semester and move on to even greater accomplishments and adventures, but I feel very lucky and honored to have been a part of their journey. Bravo guys, well played, and good luck with everything that you’re moving on to. I’ll miss you! #oud #middleeasternmusic #arabicmusic #turkishmusic #batescollege #tabla #hindustaniclassical #musicstudent #recitals #ud
