MOVIES OF MAY - 5 interesting films I saw

1. Isle of Dogs. 10/10
The latest from the nigh-obsessively detailed Wes Anderson, once again combining his usual style (slick cinematography, character quirkiness, and masterful eye for color) with the art of stop-motion animation - plus a dash of Miyazaki. Watch this one in high quality if you still can.

2. Barry Lyndon. 9/10
One of Stanley Kubrick's most perfected creations, Barry Lyndon is a movie that demands multiple viewings, allowing you to fully notice just how unreasonably well-crafted it is. I know Kubrick probably wasn't entirely pleasant a force during the filming of this one either, but... worth it?

3. Les Saisons. 10/10
This French documentary is one of the most technically impressive ever made. Much like Microcosmos (which I was not shocked to learn had many of the same people working on it), this one is less concerned with narration and more interested in simply showing animals in their everyday routine, doing so with absolutely unthinkable shots. These very real images of animals are also mixed in with scripted material that concern a species known as "humans". I will say no more.

4. Amores Perros. 10/10
This is the debut film of Alejandro González Iñárritu, a master of masters when it comes to modern-day directors, and what a debut is! This movie is authentic, varied (in terms of plotlines, characters, and themes), and grimly realistic as it is. But as a first outing, this is downright supernatural. Well done, G!

5. Deadpool 2. 6/10
It was fine.

I don’t think I’ll ever stop obsessing over Barry Lyndon. This film is easily my favorite film ever made. I have reorganized my list so much to where the change I made of placing Barry Lyndon as my number one feels absolutely right. This is Martin Scorsese’s favorite Stanley Kubrick film.

#StanleyKubrick is my favorite director of all time. He had an undefinable body of work that produced some of the absolute greatest films ever made: The Killing, Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, #2001, #AClockworkOrange, #TheShining, #FullMetalJacket & #EyesWideShut. My fanboy dedication to the man’s work is deep. I’ve purchased books, his work on dvd multiple times & a couple years ago, I was fortunate enough to see his exhibit at a museum in #sanfrancisco. I’m obsessed & never turn down a screening or two of a #Kubrick film. So imagine my surprise when I found out about #Filmworker, a #documentary about #LeonVitali, Kubrick’s #2 and right hand man. Described as a personal assistant while Vitali describes himself as a film worker, this film explores Vitali‘s life as an accomplished & trained stage actor who went onto appear in a lot of film & TV projects, culminating in an appearance in Kubrick’s #BarryLyndon, which began a lifelong association with the director as Vitali foregoes his successful acting career to personally work for Kubrick to inadvertently becoming his artistic keeper, upholding his legacy through screenings, archival work, consultant work & interviews. I remembered when the first DVD set came out of Kubrick’s work & it was a total cash-in misfire when Warner Bros later released a multiple deluxe dvd set that it was Leon, who painstakingly oversaw it, a work that didn’t go unnoticed as one of the best releases ever. An enraging thing for me, was the big time L.A. party of Kubrick’s work with many industry luminaries, an event that didn’t invite Vitali. I thought that was insulting to the man & myself as a fan. Filmworker is about the artistic process from his point of view, working for the creative perfectionist tendencies an artist like Kubrick would have: charming, warm, temperamental, engaging, obsessive, demanding, brilliant & it’s Leon that bravely takes them on to help. This doc provides an accessibility to the mystery of Kubrick, who let the films speak for themselves. #Amust for any fan of director Stanley Kubrick.

Never to me seen clips of all of Kubricks movies was what I came for, what I got was a heavy heart and a DEEP appreciation for anyone who worked with Kubrick, but more notably Leon. .
.
The experiences and situations he describes are unreal. He literally gave up his life for this man and for the future generations to watch these classics as they were meant to. I was sitting watching this already exhausted halfway through thinking about all the corrections and jobs this man had, imagine by the end...I was just in awe and praise of him. .
.
It’s not like he brags about doing everything and exploits his involvement, because you can tell he really fucking cared! and not only for the man himself but the actors, the costumes, sound, editing, color corrections, promotional work, the script, casting, organizing stanley’s archive, managing set times, oh my god this man did it all without an ounce of regret for all the days and years he worked twenty hour days. If this comes to a theater near you or plays online (if you can find it) check it out, it’s just incredible 🎞🖤

Leon Vitali gave up his career as an actor to work for Stanley Kubrick on anything he wanted. He knew nothing of filmmaking before coming under the thrall of Kubrick, but under his eye he soon becomes adept at casting, then editing, then overseeing artwork, then colour-timing and script supervision. He also acted when Kubrick told him to, oversaw grip and camera work, and became, in essence, a key component to Kubrick’s creativity.

After Kubrick’s death, he dedicated his life to preserving the master’s work, painstakingly overseeing the restoration and preservation of all of Kubrick’s work with an eye to detail that cloned Kubrick’s own. But without Kubrick, he was set adrift, pursuing his work without support, without recognition, with little access and less money.

It was in Los Angeles, toiling in obscurity, that Director Tony Zierra came across him. Tony talks to Pure Movies about his new documentary ‘Filmworker’ and the incredible story of Leon Vitali.

Everyone here knows the routine: if there’s a movie I haven’t seen that’s a classic or has been on my list forever, it’s a sure thing I will hold off on watching it until a theater around me shows it... with that being said, I fucking love living in Los Angeles. I’m so fortunate to have so many independent theaters around me with their own retrospectives and themes every week/month, it was only a matter of time that Eyes Wide Shut came around. .
.
I got super close last year when it was a double feature with Fargo.... idk tbh what the bill was about, but it was too late and I was working an hour before it began. So I was honestly really bummed because yeah we get a lot of Kubrick movies like The Shining and 2001 (it’s every week at this point) I still have yet to watch Barry Lyndon and Lolita (which haven’t come around in a while) BUT this was a 11 am screening of EWS and I fucking BURST! I’ve legit waited/ not read anything about this movie for years because it’s one of those ‘the less i know the better’
.
.
I’m so glad I waited and didn’t watch it on my laptop. I think my favorite thing about Kubrick is the mystery around him and his movies; how hard it was to work with him and due to his passing it’s rare to have people speak up about him so Leon Vitali made a documentary about his time with Kubrick called ‘Filmworker’ which is why all of his movies are playing at the Nuart. But with that, Eyes Wide Shut is so fucking beautiful you guys, I was so entranced and in awe of the scene inside the castle/home. The hues of blue and red and every look Tom gave was so powerful? I mean I’ve never watched his other work and only really know him as an action star so this was like ok I GET what y’all saw in him back then. Kubrick that wild son of a gun, gets me time and time again.

Barry Lyndon - Review - 10/10
There's really too much to talk about here given the 3 hour run time but I got to say something about this masterpiece. This is a film made in 1975 depicting the life of Barry Lyndon. This film is also based on a novel made in the 1800's. The first half of this film or Act 1, depicts Redmond Barry from the time he is born. Stanley Kubrick does a great job with the color palette in this film as it just feels as if you're inside of an old British museum filled with paintings depicting each and every scene. Barry is shown in surreal situations such as a Robbery scene which is so polite and has this weird infatuation with his cousin as he's growing. As the film progresses we get this tragic army scene featuring Barry and the actor Ryan O Neal projects this so well. After the war there's a lot of gambling scenes where Barry is shown sitting at these masterfully crafted art scenes, playing cards. Its just so well set up and everyone is dressed picture perfect to represent the era. In Act 2 Barry is married and the relationship between him and Lady Lyndon (whose last name he adopts) is very vile and he cheats even though she has his son. Bullington his stepson is well aware of his unfaithfulness to his mother and their relationship is very well progressed throughout the film making one of the best scenes I've seen in film. The supporting cast is just so memorable such as his mother who was all about her and her son only. Then there's a heart reaching scene near the end that just brought literal tears. It's just a perfect piece of art this film and hopefully there will be a 4K release in the near future.

Barry Lyndon - Review - 10/10 There's really too much to talk about here given the 3 hour run time but I got to say something about this masterpiece. Kubrick lovers this exhibit should not be missed.
Visited yesterday and was blown away by Stanley Kubrick's still photography for LOOK Magazine in the late 1940's. Easy to see the influence in space, framing and use of light to tell his incredible stories in his movies.
