Fun evening of music at Spectrum tonight! Everyone that is playing is friends with each other and also friends with other people. If you fall into the “other people” category, consider coming to participate in our showing of friendship. Also, if you have ever heard Facehugger and thought “this band would sound so much better if Colin wasn’t playing drums”, then tonight is a show just for you!
7PM Morris/O/Sowyrda (Angela Morris, Ellen O'Meara, Sam Sowyrda)
8Pm Facehugger (Anna Webber, Yuma Uesaka, Shawn Lovato, Edward Gavitt)
9PM Jessica Ackerley + Mat Muntz

This is the second Transition and only Sun Ra record currently in my collection. Gotta start somewhere right? It's a beauty too, both labels intact, just a few light marks on each side, and plays excellent. No liner booklet though, would anyone in IG land be able to send a brother a scan? As soon as I finished listening to this LP, I wanted to flip it over and start again. It's very captivating music, which I think is due to the writing and arrangements making every voice in the band clear and impactful. At this early stage the band is still swinging hard like a bigger band of the time, but with an experimental and hyper modern edge. Sun Ra's piano (and a little organ) is as unique as Monk's, Cecil Taylor's, or Herbie Nichols' was in 1956. This one will be with me for a very long time or maybe forever. #sunra#sunraarkestra#johngilmore#julianpriester#transitionrecords#tomwilson#jazzvinyl#avantgarde#albumcovers#laneperception
I threw this on while attacking some office projects this morning, but it turns out this 1971 UK Tangent pressing is just too dang enchanting to remain background music. It’s got many of the elements I love for free jazz - excellent clarity and transparency (these guys work hard for their unique sounds and I want to hear all the character they put in), real dynamics (when the horn players really BLOW or someone slams a drum, I want to be startled), and powerful presence and immediacy (let’s get the musicians right here in the room with me and not stuck in the speakers please). I don’t mean to get too audio dork on y’all, but everything’s clicking right now and it’s bringing this wonderful album to life. I somehow just got through this whole post without getting into the music at all (and this legendary improv crew deserves better) so I’ll have to atone for that the next time I post some SME.
#paris#pariswalk#art#centrepompidou#avantgarde#russianavantgarde
