We just released our list of highlights for the upcoming @abararebooks Battersea Fair, and this is the jewel in the crown. It's a rare, official photo album documenting Operation Greenhouse, a series of nuclear tests in 1951 in which thermonuclear fusion was generated for the first time, proving that hydrogen bombs were feasible. The tests were carried out at Enewetak Atoll, and this striking image shows the detonation, nicknamed "George", in which fusion was first achieved (a fission weapon was used to set off a small thermonuclear core, testing the principle). In addition to photos of the four detonations, the album's 89 images also show daily life for crew, construction of bases and equipment on the atoll, and scientific and technical preparations. A remarkable and rare survival.
Happy Friday! It's another gray day and looks like the rest of the weekend here in the NY area is going to be a washout too. ☔ Like they say... May showers bring June flowers! 😂
