⛩Is the E36 the Best M3 ever?⛩ Here's what @CarKeys_UK had to say !
"Compared with the revered E30, the second-gen model was arguably more capable in terms of handling, cheaper to maintain, more efficient and more usable in day-to-day life with a better torque and power curve, and it was faster too.

So it mightn’t have been as all-out aggressive as every model since, but as an all-rounder it was and still remains one of the best performance saloons ever made, and arguably the best M3 to ever roll out of Munich.
“Obviously the complete package was perfect. It had the power, the understatement, the comfort and the potential for everyday use,” Richter concluded. Can’t sum it up better than that, really.

"As a part of Mercedes’ sometimes tumultuous relationship with racing, the 190E 2.3-16v would be a significant vehicle regardless of its success. Though it didn’t catch on in the long run, it’s this car’s legacy that’s important. By kicking BMW’s M3 into high gear, this wild little Mercedes sedan triggered a competition that’s still yielding awesome cars today."

The 190E 2.3 is a special car for many reason, one of them being its design. Lets see what transform a regular 190E into a Cosworth one!
"The bodywork was aerodynamically modified to match the car's high performance. Front and rear aprons extended further down and a small spoiler on the trunk lid generated additional downforce. Because of these additions the 16v was 10mm longer and 28mm wider then the standard 190. The alloy wheels also had a special design for better aerodynamics and better cooling for the brakes."

Developed in collaboration with Cosworth initially for the rally scene of the 1980s, the flagship version of the 190E series eventually went on to dominate track-racing and ended up on the roads as well, putting up a good fight against BMW's iconic M3. Even though nine times out of ten, people would choose the Bimmer over the Merc, the 190E Cosworth's underdog status makes it an equally appealing car. As Richard Hammond put it: "it was Cinderella, but the coach never came".⛩

Let's check out what makes this beast roar on the road! Here's some #NinjaFacts about the 2.3 16V engine: "The heart of the 2.3-16 was its engine. Mercedes therefore collaborated with engine building masters Cosworth Technology Ltd. They helped to develop the 16 valve cylinder head with mechanical valve lifters. They came up with 185 hp from only 2.3 liters displacement. It had a light alloy cylinder head with dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder (16 valves total), giving the performance version its name. The engine had a mechanically/ electronically controlled gasoline injection system. The 2.3L engine (designated the M102) produced 185 bhp at 6,000 rpm. The rev limiter was set at 7,000 rpm. Acceleration from 0-60mph was 7.5 seconds, and the top speed was 143 mph. In 1986 a catalytic converter became an option, in that case the engine had 170 bhp. The cars destined for the US had a slightly reduced compression ratio (9.7:1 instead of 10.5:1), and had 167 bhp at 5800 rpm. The engine was also fitted with an oil cooler to ensure efficient oil cooling."

Let's pay homage and learn a little something today about the 2.3 16v racing heritage & how some guy named Ayrton Senna announced his arrival to the racing world: 🚦" When the Nürburgrings then new 2.8 mile track was completed in 1984, Mercedes brought along 20 of its new 190E 2.3-16s  to inaugurate the circuit. Each barely modified other than the addition of a roll cage, race seat and a few other safety bits - and handed them over to a bunch of incredibly talented racing drivers.🏎 The roster reads like a who’s who of F1 past and present at the time: Jack Brabham, James Hunt, Alain Prost, John Surtees and Niki Lauda were all there, as well as an F1 newbie from Brazil called Ayrton Senna.
🏎💨
Niki Lauda missed qualifying and started at the back, but put on an incredible performance, storming through the field to second. And yet he was unable to pass the considerably less experienced driver who was leading the race: Ayrton Senna. The Brazilian took the chequered flag ahead of Lauda, with Carlos Reutemann in third and Keke Rosberg in fourth. It marked Senna as a forced to be reckoned with, and made the car he drove a significant piece of motorsport history".🏎💨🏆🚦

#NinjaHistory time! So how (and why) did Mercedes & Cosworth team up to make one of the most memorable saloons of all time? Let's find out "November marked the launch, 31 years ago we were introduced to the ground-breaking 190 saloon, which was and still is a very good car indeed. And of those, the Cosworth-engineered 2.3-16 and 2.5-16 versions were gems.

A small saloon like the 190 was a major departure from what the market had come to expect from Mercedes, whose product line, a few brilliant efforts aside, was becoming rather staid.

The idea of a high-performance version of the 190 came along even before the launch of the base model, which was initially conceived as a 2-litre car, using the reliable M102 series engine, which could be taken out to 2.3 litres. It was this enlarged block which would form the basis of what happened next.
Since the demise in 1961 of the Borgward firm, whose 1.5-litre Formula 2 engines had broken so much ground, four-valve technology was rare in Germany so if Daimler was to develop a performance version of the M102 it would have to look overseas – which is how Cosworth Engineering came to be involved. Even better, it had its own new foundry, so after a discreet approach from Mercedes, a development file was opened and work began. The objective was an engine which could produce about 190 brake horsepower, or an increase of 40 per cent over the donor unit, reliably.

Cosworth’s work was restricted to the light-alloy head itself, the 10.5:1 Mahle pistons and the beautifully crafted exhaust manifold. Even the standard con-rods were deemed to be strong enough. The result would be the highest-revving road car engine that Daimler-Benz had ever built. It would never be known as a Cosworth and was never badged as such, but the connection was artfully leaked. "👌

#TransmissionTuesday with some History! Let's look at what @roadandtrack had to say about the MB dog leg transmission. " The transmission was a so-called "dogleg shift." Which is to say, first gear is down and to the left, with second and third in the center, and fourth and fifth to the right.Once you get on a racetrack, however, the brilliance of the dogleg pattern is made plain. First gear doesn't enter into the equation on a road course. Instead, it's the rapid shift to second that proves useful, particularly if you have a high-winding engine that needs the revs to exit tight corners. On the negative side, the fourth-to-third downshift is a little trickier, but that's across the middle of the pattern. Second-gear corners tend to be tight and crowded, so having the easiest shift possible for the entry (and exit) is appreciated"

Let's get into some German car history with the 2.3 16v Baby Benz! From TopSpeed "This hot rod sedan may seem a bit out of character for Mercedes, especially in its wildly aggressive final form, but it’s got a very important place in the flow of automotive history: many people agree that this is the car that officially kicked off the German horsepower wars. It’s definitely responsible for the BMW M3, because BMW put that car on the road as a direct response to the 190E 2.3-16v" 😎
The latest addition to the Ninja Dojo! A beautiful two owner #MercedesBenz #190E 2.3 16v #cosworth . This legend has low miles, original paint, and is in spectacular condition. This is why BMW made the #E30 #M3 to keep up with this bad boy 😎
