I know, Petrified Forest ๐, I too was petrified when I found out about H.R. 3990 (the act that would allow the president to shrink existing monuments without consulting Congress). We should be working together to keep these areas protected, so that we all have a chance to enjoy them and preserve their historical significance. ๐ These areas have been here long before us. In March 2016 I traveled through the new @parquepatagonia with longtime friends @danduane and @chris_mcnamara and new friend #yadidlevyphotography . It was an amazing adventure that you can read about in the December 2017 issue of @mensjournal. But whatโs really remarkable is how this park has come to be. @kristine_tompkins and her late husband #DougTompkins had the vision of creating the park, purchasing 175,000 acres of the #vallechacabuco which would then connect to two other Chilean national reserves, #reservajeinimeini and #reservatamango . The resulting park is the size of #Yosemite and is a remarkably beautiful place and important reserve of Patagonian flora and fauna. What is also remarkable is that while the #trumpadministration works to undo national monuments and cede our #publiclands for extractive industries, Chile along with @tompkins_conservation has teamed up to place into permanent protection 10 million acres! #americasgreatestidea is alive and well in Chile.

Heading home after 10 days of Wilderness Medicine training off the grid at the historic Lamar Buffalo Ranch. // 1907, Yellowstone NP - humans do something they've never done before. With the Yellowstone bison herd down to 23 animals, a conservation effort begins to protect the species from extinction. I just finished watching Ken Burns' National Parks: America's Greatest Idea because I'm in the midst of planning a hiking trip this summer with my Dad through one of the parks I've wanted to see for a long time: Yellowstone! Been a long time since I've been on a proper wilderness retreat--last time was 2011 when I hiked the Grand Canyon for a Geology class--and I'm in great need for what Thoreau calls the "tonic of wildness." The composer Ferde Grofรฉ was so moved by his experience of the parks system that he wrote the now-famous Grand Canyon Suite. In 1871, the Hayden expedition set out to survey the sources of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers, the area that was soon to become the nationโs first national park. Thomas Moran joined as artist of the team and depicted many of Yellowstoneโs geologic features and landscapes. These depictions later proved essential in convincing the United States Congress to establish Yellowstone as a national park. During the forty days he spent in the area, Moran documented over 30 different sites. His sketches along with William Henry Jacksonโs photographs captured the nationโs attention and forever linked the artist with the area.
