"...it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea...we are going back from whence we came." -President John F. Kennedy
Was great to escape from the mountains and listen to owls and elephant seals and do some exploring with @do_you_grok and @catherineullery at Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate Recreation Area. .

This place is the product of a massive EPA driven cleanup after the US Army and private industry polluted it so badly it was deemed uninhabitable by humans. Now it’s a wildlife refuge with over 330 unique species of wildlife calling it home, boasting a backdrop of the Front Range dwarfing the Denver skyline. #publiclands#americasgreatestidea#denver#colorado#rockymountains
“I will prepare and some day my chance will come.” - Abraham Lincoln
Did you know? Abraham Lincoln is responsible for signing into law the Yosemite Grant, protecting the tract of land that is now Yosemite National Park. It was the first time in U.S. history that land was designated for public use and preservation, and is viewed by many as the birth of the national parks system. .
In March 2016 I traveled through the new @parquepatagonia with longtime friends @danduane and @chris_mcnamara and new friend #yadidlevyphotography . It was an amazing adventure that you can read about in the December 2017 issue of @mensjournal. But what’s really remarkable is how this park has come to be. @kristine_tompkins and her late husband #DougTompkins had the vision of creating the park, purchasing 175,000 acres of the #vallechacabuco which would then connect to two other Chilean national reserves, #reservajeinimeini and #reservatamango . The resulting park is the size of #Yosemite and is a remarkably beautiful place and important reserve of Patagonian flora and fauna. What is also remarkable is that while the #trumpadministration works to undo national monuments and cede our #publiclands for extractive industries, Chile along with @tompkins_conservation has teamed up to place into permanent protection 10 million acres! #americasgreatestidea is alive and well in Chile.
Thank you Kris and all of those who have worked so hard to make the dream come alive. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Heading home after 10 days of Wilderness Medicine training off the grid at the historic Lamar Buffalo Ranch. // 1907, Yellowstone NP - humans do something they've never done before. With the Yellowstone bison herd down to 23 animals, a conservation effort begins to protect the species from extinction. For the next 40+ years the Bison herd is ranched like cattle and later released to support the park's bison population and save the American icon. #yolostone#nationalparks#americasgreatestidea
I just finished watching Ken Burns' National Parks: America's Greatest Idea because I'm in the midst of planning a hiking trip this summer with my Dad through one of the parks I've wanted to see for a long time: Yellowstone! Been a long time since I've been on a proper wilderness retreat--last time was 2011 when I hiked the Grand Canyon for a Geology class--and I'm in great need for what Thoreau calls the "tonic of wildness." The composer Ferde Grofé was so moved by his experience of the parks system that he wrote the now-famous Grand Canyon Suite. I'm spinning it this morning while I dream of geysers and canyons and hot springs. #nowspinning#ferdegrofe#grandcanyonsuite#kenburns#americasgreatestidea
"We are stardust, we are golden, we are billion year old carbon, and we got to get ourselves back to the garden." -Joni Mitchell ⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰⛰ Good evening with good friends, and now bedtime with Ken Burns and the national parks. This is a photo I took of the Kaibab monocline during a hike in 2011. Protect those wild places, you guys. #wegottogetourselvesbacktothegarden#nationalparks#protectyourparks#kenburns
Stand up. ..
Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. ~~ Robert F. Kennedy
