Largo della Carità was since ancient times a famous and buzzing market that animated the square with its goods and the business that they dealt with. Even today it is always crowded, especially because of the intersection between Via Toledo and the Pignasecca market
At the center of Piazza Carità we find the monument to Salvo D'Acquisto, a modern work by the Neapolitan sculptress Lidia Cottone, inaugurated in 1971 in the presence of the then president of the council Emilio Colombo. It was decided to rename the square in honor of the vice-presidential national hero, but the decision was never ratified. This is why many Neapolitans, believing they are correct, still today call Piazza Salvo D'Acquisto erroneously.
