A splash page (and back cover) I designed for a magazine article about Alfonsina Strada! If you don’t know who she is, you should look her up! She’s shockingly unrecognised.
In short, she was an Italian cyclist who rode the Giro d’Italia in the 1920s, proving that women could participate in major cycling events (which even today are still heavily dominated by men)

The wheel of fortune ... Alfonsina Strada ... In the main picture is a lady in her 60’s repairing a racing bike in her own shop in Milan ... A lady repairing a bicycle is perhaps in itself a novelty some might say, a lady of her age perhaps even more so, but this lady in particular was no ordinary lady an exceptional person, her achievements simply incredible and utterly inspirational ... Born into poverty in Castelfranco Emilia near Modena in 1891 she was 1 of 8 children who as a child gazed in awe as the peloton passed by her home one day, the seed was sown ... She began riding her father’s bicycle and entered her 1st race aged 13 duly winning a live pig, a big prize for a hungry family ... She never looked back ... She raced against men and women beating men regularly ... In 1915 she rode the Giro Di Lombardia as the only female, out of 75 starters she finished 31st, equal last but crossing the line with 2 men, she entered again the following year and came 21st beating several men ... Her greatest performance though was the 1924 Giro D’Italia where she finished the gruelling 3613km course as unclassified as she’d crashed on stage 7 snapping her handlebars, making a makeshift repair with a peasant’s walking stick and arriving outside of the limit, but she’d finished ... She was allowed to carry on and by the end of the Giro if it wasn’t for bad luck she’d have finished 20hrs ahead of some men ... Many didn’t finish ... This woman was unbreakable though, she collected her 50,000 lire finishing bonus and made much more in criteriums becoming famous ... All this in an incredibly tough period in cycling, no team car, all self repairs, unsurfaced roads ... Some said her racing style was unladylike, Alfonsina in her no nonsense style replied that god had given her strong legs and racing put food on the table whether her opponents were male or female ... She survived 2 husbands and rode her last race aged 61!! ... She rode a 500cc Moto Guzzi which killed her aged 68 falling on her as she was on her way to watch a cycling race ... Alfonsina Strada ... Indomitable ... Grande ... #thewelgian#alfonsinastrada#indomitable#cyclinghistory#cyclinglegend#inspirational
Balkissa Chaibou is a Nigerian activist who advocates for the education of girls. Further, she also campaigns against forced marriage as she herself was subject to it by her uncle. She wisely says, „Study with all your might. It’s not easy but it’s your only hope.“
Alfonsina Strada was an Italian cyclist who set a speed record that stopf gor 26 years at the Giro d‘Italia, even through she rode a 44-pound, 1-gear bike! And this was all before women could officially compete in cycle racing. .
