ASK FOR HELP. I've always sort of hated that professional advice because I've taken it and been burned by it.
I get it that when you're young, or a woman, or otherwise in a place where you're supposed to be a leader but don't look like one, asking for help can be really easily perceived as weakness. Sometimes we ask for help TOO much, when we already know the answers and are actually just asking for affirmation. Asking can weaken our stance and make people doubt our abilities that are actually completely sound. BUT... you do need to ask for help sometimes.
So I'll qualify this advice and say ASK FOR HELP from the people you feel safe being vulnerable with. ASK FOR HELP from the people you know won't hold it against you. ASK FOR HELP from people not directly impacted by your decision or in your community. Be really honest with yourself. Am I not asking for assistance because it will work against me, or just because I'm afraid? People will surprise you with how much they are willing to give.
I (surprise surprise) tend to be pretty shitty at asking for help. But it's been a goal this year to do it more. I think often it's easy to stop learning when you're put in a leadership position because you feel like you're supposed to have everything under control. But especially for those of you taking leadership roles early, that is such a disservice to your growth. There are so many teachers all around us, all the time. Ask.
